On November 6, 2010 Jackie O’s released its first rum barrel aged beer, Oil of Aphrodite. The rum barrel that we received, imparted such a distinct and decadent character, I knew that we had to give that same barrel another fill. We have done this in the past with bourbon barrels and found that the bourbon character is very subtle and the oak flavors tend to be more pronounced. We crossed our fingers and filled the rum barrel with Dark Apparition, hoping to further harvest the amazing wealth of rum character that barrel had initially offered.
I checked on it after it’s initial 3-month aging period, and was delighted to discover the same incredible flavors from the first fill. Most noticeable was the candied orange character, although not as strong, it was still an integral part of the beer. 30 Madagascar vanilla beans were added to the barrel. The beer and beans aged in the barrel for an additional 2 months before being bottled. Vanilla Bean Rum Barrel Dark Apparition is a beautiful beer that embodies many bold flavors and aromas without being over the top. Enjoy with friends and loved ones.

22oz bottle 29 of 225 pours out dark brown almost black topped with a small tan head. Nose is roast malts vanilla booze rum I guess some pit fruit and a little spice. Taste is more of the nice sweet malts chocolate vanilla rum barrel notes and ash.

Bottle shared during Scopey’s 5K tasting - Croydon, London. Many thanks to Colin! Pours black-brown with a creamy tan head. Rich vanilla creme aroma, light chocolate. Medium sweet flavor with some chalky cocoa, oily vanilla, tangy dark fruits. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish, oily, with gritty earth, dried vanilla pods. The texture is a bit odd. Just OK overall.

Bottle split at Scopey’s 5K Extravaganza of Oompah Band meets doorbell music, acquired from an IP trade with dat man from Noo Joisey - J T Clockwork - 15/02/14. Black with a moderate tan covering. Nose is chocolate vanilla, light rum esters, dark malts, dark toffee fudge, all fairly mellow but pulls together what it says on the tin. Taste comprises tangy dark fruits up front, brown sugars, rich chocolate, vanilla essence, light rum BA, not quite the same depth as the aromas. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Solid enough impy, ticks the boxes, delivers the flavours but not top draw. Easy drinker though and the alcohol is well disguised.

Bottle, thanks to Colin. It pours oily, near black with a small tan head. The nose is rich, vanilla, toffee, oily, milk chocolate, fudge, rum & raisin ice cream and candy. The taste is tangy, dark fruits, toast, vanilla, plum, raisin, prune, vanilla and rum with a bitter-sweet finish. Full body and fine carbonation. Not a whole lot of depth, but solid nonetheless.

Bottle shared by Noodleuser. Poured a dark black color with a touch of tan on the edges. Artificial (or perhaps too-real) vanilla notes to it. Okay, but not what I had hoped. Rum brings out a slightly sour note to it that wasn’t as pleasant as I had hoped.

Bottle. Vanilla, light rum, and chocolate malt aroma. Brown with moderate head. Bittersweet dark chocolate malt and ash flavor. Okay - didn’t get much vanilla though.
