On November 6, 2010 Jackie O’s released its first rum barrel aged beer, Oil of Aphrodite. The rum barrel that we received, imparted such a distinct and decadent character, I knew that we had to give that same barrel another fill. We have done this in the past with bourbon barrels and found that the bourbon character is very subtle and the oak flavors tend to be more pronounced. We crossed our fingers and filled the rum barrel with Dark Apparition, hoping to further harvest the amazing wealth of rum character that barrel had initially offered.

I checked on it after it’s initial 3-month aging period, and was delighted to discover the same incredible flavors from the first fill. Most noticeable was the candied orange character, although not as strong, it was still an integral part of the beer. 30 Madagascar vanilla beans were added to the barrel. The beer and beans aged in the barrel for an additional 2 months before being bottled. Vanilla Bean Rum Barrel Dark Apparition is a beautiful beer that embodies many bold flavors and aromas without being over the top. Enjoy with friends and loved ones.

Opaque black beer, small tan head. Chocolate and minerals on the nose. Palate is silky with fine carbonation. Dark chocolate and vanilla, not too sweet. Trace of coffee. Dark malt, bordering on being sour. The rum makes an appearance before the somewhat minerally finish, but it’s never strong. Nice beer but it’s a bit too tangy to be great.

Bottle. Opaque black liquid with small light tan head. Aroma of licorice, spices, paracetamol, wood, raw sugar and rum. Weird. Taste is light sweet and light bitter with licorice, wood, vanilla and a bit booze. Somewhat astringent. Medium bodied with low to medium carbonation. Too boozey and weird barrel.

22 oz. bottle, pours pitch black with a small light brown head. Aroma of vanilla bean, rum barrels, and raisins - much more pleasant than the one without vanilla beans. Flavour of vanilla beans, rum barrels, some cocoa nibs, and tart notes still present from the rum barrels. The vanilla beans makes this more complex than the rum barrel version without vanilla beans. Finishes lightly tart, moderately sweet and somewhat boozy. Decent stuff, but overrated.

Bottle, 22oz, at TFODRBSG-12. Not much head on this one, just some beige bubbles. It’s a bit oily in the pour, next to black in color. Quite a lot of vanilla on the nose, with dark chocolate, dark coffee and a faint roasted touch. Lightly warming on the palate, full-bodied and soft. Vanilla, dark chocolate, roasted malts and some mocha. Lasting finish. A nice one indeed, but I suspect I’d prefer the regular edition. 120818
