The story: The golden Bohemian skies turned black. The cool floral breeze spiked into a whirl of burning bitter fruits. Everything changed. A beautiful dance between darkness and light. Brutal and elegant. Thunder and shooting stars. It was Friday the 13th. Black Friday.

The taste: Black Friday is a pilsner unlike any you’ve had before. Stained black in the brewing process and made using super-sized hops of Saaz descent (Premiant from Czech Republic and Motueka from New Zealand; Saaz is the traditional pilsner hop), it’s got a cocoa-like foam, it’s nutty and chocolatey to begin and then finishes with an elegant and classic clean pilsner finish – it plays tricks on your tongue, starting dark and finishing light. The hops then give lemon spiked with herbs and a tropical fruit background. It’s lager but it’s different.

Malt: Pilsner and Roast Barley
Hops: Premiant and Motueka

On tap at BrewDog Camden, London on 4th August 2012. Black with off-white head and a little lace. Fruity aroma with plenty of roast malts. Rich malty and slightly smoky main taste - berries, coffee, toast and smoke. Plenty of flavour foci. Tangy citric kick. Bitterish end with roastiness and tanginess. Zingy mouthfeel.

Opaque black beer, little pale tan head. Palate is a little crisp and quite dry. Minerals. Dry dark malt, a little roast, but not bitter. Tiny bit of citrus in the minerally semi dry and crisp finish. Not bad and I think my first Black Pils!
