Emperor Norton is a Russian Imperial Stout tilting the alcohol scales at 11%. The original Emperor Norton was an eccentric fellow that at one point, proclaimed himself as the first Emperor of these United States. He must have had a few beers like this based on his actions.

On tap at the brewery. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma has coffee and earthy, nutty aromas. Flavors of coffee, cocoa, earthy nuttiness, and at times ashy herbal flavors. Pretty good stuff.

5th Annual MBG Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. Opaque dark brown/black body, medium tan to ochre head. Burnt toffee, caramel, roasted malt, and licorice nose. Interesting licorice-driven body, with cinnamon and brown sugar, roasted malts, and coffee. Modest sweetness. Earthy and rich, not syrupy or heavy. Very good.
