Sample at Kurtβs 49th birthday party. Hazy amber-brown color with a medium cream-colored head that dissipates steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Hops and caramel malt in the nose, along with some wood. Full-bodied with flavors of hops, dried fruits, malt and caramel. The finish is sweet and malty up front with a hoppy aftertaste left behind. Pretty good overall.

On tap @ Copenhagen Beer Celebration. A near clear deep deep woody-brown beer with a amazing looking beige head. The bubbles just dissolved in a amazing way. Fascinating to look at! Think this has to be the perfect looking beer. It smells light sweet with caramel, wood, malts, dates and syrup. Subtle, sweet, light vinious and really nice. It's quite sticky with some almost burned flavors! Caramel sweet, woody, really dark but more bitter chocolate - cause it is actually somewhat bitter, with a bit of warming alcohol as well. Damn tasty! I could (but shouldn't) drink a whole lots of this! 12.05.2012

Tap at CBC, May 2012. It pours deep brown, with a red hue and thin beige head. The nose is wood, sweet fig, raisin, currant, maple syrup, varnish and alcohol warmth. The taste is rather alcoholic, dark sweet fruit, wood, varnish, cake and toffee, with alcohol warmth in the finish. Full body and fine carbonation. Perhaps a bit boozy and sweet, but enjoyable nonetheless.

On tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration.
Hazy deep amber beer, good cream coloured head. Palate is soft with prickly fine carbonation. Toffee and a little wood. Mild dried fruits. A little lacto. Quite a dry finish. 7.3

A 14 year old bottle. A mild haze on this deep amber brown beer, good bubbly tan head. Smooth palate, a little dry, good fine minerally carbonation. The malts are fairly light bodied but, rich in flavour. A mild creamy streak underneath dark and, not that sweet toffee. A fairly robust bitterness in the second half and, that rides alongside juicy ripe fruits. Some orchard fruits here, very ripe plum and pear, trade of something cherry. Alcohol spice on the fairly smooth finish. Well, bloody marvellous then. Not only has this survived a decade and a half with aplomb but, it's a great reminder of what an unbarrelled barleywine can be. Smooth finish leaves a long tingling bitter linger.
