The first lady of Borg is named after the heroine of one of Iceland’s most popular folktales The Deacon of Dark River. A tale of ghosts, unrequited love, and life triumphing over death, told against the backdrop of elements essential to Iceland’s character: ice, snow and whorling waters; dark and mysterious – the same elements that inspire this rich and bold Icelandic stout.

330mL bottle. Pours very dark brown with a tan head. Cocoa and toasted bready malts on the nose. Flavour has a rich and toasty malt base with notes of dry cocoa and dried berries. Solid imperial stout.

A glass from a tap at L'Autre Oeil in Aylmer, Quebec, Canada. Low tan head on a near black body. Solid, medium density and mouth feel for an IS. Roasted coffee leads the taste profile, complimented by dark chocolate and berries. As with other Borg ISs, no evidence of hops under the lead taste elements.

Bottle at the hotel, Reykjavik. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, liquorice, coffee, mocha, ash, dark fruits, cherries. Flavour is medium sweet with a long smooth bittersweet finish. Body is thick and full. This truly is a lovely, refined and rich Imperial Stout with a surprising drinkability.

Sample courtesy of Grumbo, cheers Graham! Black colour, some bubbles on top and aroma of roast malt, chocolate, dried fruit, wood barrel, oak. Taste is dark malty, roasted, molasses, chocolate & coffee, dried fruit, woody, boozy with earthy bitterness. Full to medium bodied, soft carbonation, drying boozy roast bitter finish. Nicely drinkable.

Tap at Uba Ja Humal. Rather full body, medium carbonation. Med-high bitterness, med-light sweetness. Lots of roasty chocolatey and coffeeish maltiness, also med-light peaty phenolic smokiness, let's hope it comes from peated malt. It works though. Also light dried fruits. Lots of breadth and intensity of the malts, really rewarding sipper. Med-light pleasant warmth. All in all excellent.

Dark brown/black colour, brown foam. Nose of roasted malts, coffee, some fruitiness. Roasty, bitter with coffee notes. Very nice pure imperial stout.

Pours mahogany tinged black into a tulip. Mocha head with good retention recedes to hug rim. Licorice, espresso and chocolate aromas. Soft with dark chocolate and mocha front to back. Lasting earthy espresso finish.
