A blackened version of Mad Hatter brewed with black malt for a dark, roasty sweetness to the base of the flavor profile. Finishes with a strong Centennial hop character from dry hopping.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of Kristina. Pours a clear dark brown with an orange hue and a creamy beige head. Very fresh citrusy hops in the nose dominating over a subtle roast, Medium body, sweet and perfumy hops, very perfumy again the roast is very subtle. Dry and hoppy finish. Very elegant. 220312

Draft at Dexters. Opaque black with a solid beige head. Oily resinous burnt coffee/toffee aroma. More enjoyable than the Farmhouse, a very drinkable BIPA. Steady semi-soapy hops. Clean for the style, medium to full bodied. Middle of the road, enjoyable enough. Well executed, but pretty tame.

Bottle. Chocolate malt and citrus peel/pine aroma. Dark chestnut brown with giant tan head. Slightly sweet ashy chocolate malt and moderately bitter grapefruit and pine flavor. On the dry side. Not bad.

Bottle @ Oliver Twist on September 30. Pours hazy black with a small white head. Smell is fresh with grapefruit and some coffee. Taste is fresh with roasted malts and liquorice. It has a nice bitterness to it and is quite drinkable.

Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm (4.8 %). Dark brown, miniscule head. Aroma of black currant and coffee. Dry and light bodied with clean, hard mouthfeel. Roasty licorice, lots of black currant hops. The hardness makes it almost thin. Long resiny bitterness. Nice combination of roasty and hoppy flavours, but quite harsh and edgy.

A decent Black IPA, but lacking any defining characteristic other than its lack of a defining characteristic. It’s like they missed being good by just a hair in all aspects; the hops are apparent in the flavor and nose, but not quite enough to keep you interested. The dark beer notes provide a foundation, but not one solid enough to support any big chocolate or coffee or charred tastes. The Mad Hatter’s image should not be used on beer this tame.

Grapefruit and lime aroma, really no roasted notes at all. If you sampled this with a blindfold, the aroma would have you believing it is an ordinary IPA. Clear garnet brown, thin tan head, good lacing. Charred oak and pine, quite a bit of char. I’m surprised this isn’t rated higher. It’s not as spectacular as some IDAs, but it’s a solid offering.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thin, fast-dying tan head, looks a bit like guinness. Aroma of fresh hops, roasted malt, peat and a bit of peanuts - nice. Medium-bodied; Strong roasty flavour with a lot of fresh cascade hops and a little peat near the end. Aftertaste shows a bit of peanuts, some earth, some caramel and a little floral hoppiness at the end. Overall, a nice black ipa that shows good character and a nice complexity. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia on 04-July-2011 (Vintage 2011) for US$4.99 sampled at home in Washington on 01-September-2011.
