This unique beer is a plum infused Wee Heavy that experienced a secondary fermentation from native Athens’ micoflora off of the skins of the local plums. This all happened with in an American Oak barrel over the course of three months. A 10.5% one of a kind brew that embodies tart/sweet plumbs, peat-smoked Scottish ale, and second-generation bourbon barrel flavors (soft bourbon notes and some very refined oak character). It was exciting to see this beer actually make it on tap. I thought it was a crazy idea. Once that barrel was opened up, a delightful surprise sprang forth.

Opaque dark brown - black beer, good tan head. Light nose of bourbon and fruit. Airy smooth palate, pretty dry. Creamy malt with slightly bitter and sour bourbon. Dry wood and plummy fruits. Finishes dry. This so nearly works at being something unique but it’s too bitter and dry.

Bottled. An unclear dark brown beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of alcohol, bourbon, malt, plums, and brettanomyces. The flavor is sweet with notes of plums, wood, bourbon, malt, and caramel, leading to a dry alcoholic finish. Too much bourbon for my liking - but I’m not a bourbon lover.

Bottle thanks to exiled (2010 74/192). Pours with no head over a hazed deep brown body (so hazy I wrote the descriptor twice in my notes...and this was early on in the tasting...go figure). Aromas are ashy with bourbon, charred barrel, scotch, fruity and boozy. Flavors of alcohol, a bit vinous, lightly tart, plum and chocolate. Light bubbles and a bit thin.

Sample at Jackie O’s BBDA and Oil of Aphrodite Release and Barrel aged Beer Festival on 9/11/10. Pours a murky reddish-brown color with a medium thin light beige head that diminishes quickly. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark fruit, malt and oak. Medium body with flavors of oaky bourbon, dark malt and fruity esters. Touches of sweet caramel as well. The finish is fruity and malty with a mild boozy aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
