Black Maria is an American inspired Black IPA. It is black as an stout and hoppy as an IPA. The beer has been brewed with a good amount of highly roasted Carafa Malts, but with a relatively low amount of caramel and chocolate malts. This way we get the burned bitter and delicate chocolate notes in the beers, that goes well with the bitter and fruity aromas of the hops. The lack of caramel and chocolate results in less residual sweetness that you normally pick up from an Stout. For the hops we wanted some hops that could stand up against the Carafa malts. Therefore we used a mix of Columbus, Centennial, Galaxy and Cascade for the hop profile.

0.33l bottle. Black body, creamy light brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, some smoke and some citrusy hops. The taste is really smoky with notes of chocolate and citrusy hops. Medium body, creamy texture. Nice, but would be better for me with less smoke.

Bottle. A dense, two-finger light tan head forms over a next to black body. Nice lacings. The aroma has lots of hop pellets, with citrus peel, pine cones, some alcohol and roasted malts. Coffee hints. It’s full-bodied and quite dry on the palate, with a pleasant carbonation level and some warmth. Roasted malts, pine cones, hop pellets and citrus peel, and a pleasant bitterness. Lasting finish. Pretty lovely this black ipa. 140426

On tap at Pudel, Tallinn. Petty much black, with a tan head. Hoppy and roasty aroma, citrus, dark malts, licorice and hints of coffee and spices. Moderate to medium sweet with flavours of citrus and dark malts and a quite bitter finish. Well balanced with alcohol well integrated. Nice BIPA!

Tap at the Beer Temple, Amsterdam. Poured a deep mahogany with a big frothy light tan head. The aroma is roasted malt grassy dry hop. The flavour is medium bitter with a rich smooth spice hop alcohol bitter palate and short spicy pepper hop finish. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. A super smooth rich black IPA. Half way towards a spicy stout!

Bottle, Brew Dog shop. Dark, swarthy pour with a tan crown. Enticing nose of piney hop, fruits, roasted malts and coffee. Flavour comprised similar elements with some on point bitternes and a little warming booze hit. Plenty to admire here - a very solid Black IPA.
