Draft at Pizzeria Paradiso - Old Town Alexandria. Like the base beer, this one poured a practically pitch black color, with an even smaller, more wispy off-white head. Aroma was lots of roasted dark malts, some bitter dark chocolate character, touch of vanilla and woody notes. Flavor was about the same, lots of roast upfront. Light syrup and molasses, smoother than the base beer, but the roast is still strong with this one.

12oz bottle given to me by the chef of Mussel Bar in Arlington. Big thanks. Pours a very murky, opaque black with some creamy, tan head. Nose is rather interesting, some burnt toast, malt, molasses, charred wood, a little squid ink, there’s a little maple sugar, some meaty notes. Flavor has some black pepper and cinnamon, some salt too, squid ink, plenty of malt notes, toast, burnt caramel, some roast mushroom, match stick. Full bodied, oaky finish. Lots to unpack.
