As some of you know, or don’t know at all, we here at Pretty Things enjoy our history. Yes folks, and we like our history and we like it weeds and all. This is why when we were faced with the option of teaming up with Ron Pattinson (our very favorite brewing Historian), we jumped at the chance. After all, Ron’s "afflict the comfortable" brewing research style takes assumed beer styles and flips them on their heads. This time around Ron’s taken us back to colonial India of the 1850s where the rum-drinking troops (or "squaddies") are dying at alarming rates. A beer figured into their survival but it isn’t what you’re thinking.

The recipe that we’re using dates back to a brewsheet from December 6th, 1855. To be specific, this was a beer brewed at Barclay Perkins in London. 4.5 pounds of hops per barrel! That’s a double IPA people. That’s more than some of the hoppiest MODERN IPAs out there. Our Once Upon a Time 1855 EIP is dry, malty good with a substantial pipe-tobacco bitterness, dark garnet colour and 6% abv.

Bottle at Fin & Loz’s tasting with Jan, Charlotte, Craig, Stella & kids consumed Saturday 22.10.11 Jan brought this beer along to the tasting, cheers Jan! Light sweet maltiness on the nose. The taste is quite, quite lovely, nice truffleyness, chocolate abounds, cocoa powder. Its has a lovely soft carbonation that sits well in the mouth. Despite the chocolate it does have a nice hoppiness throughout. A8 A4 T8 P5 Ov16 4.1

22 oz bottle, Purchased @ Blanchard’s Liquor’s, Allston, MA. Used a pint, deep brown. Murkey with off-white, thick full, foamy head. Awesome retention. Pleasant chocolate malt and earthy hops nose. Flavor is real nice. Chocolate roasted malt, slight coffee and a healthy hop kick in the finish. Finish is long and bitter when at room temperature. Medium to nearly a fuller composition. This brew deserves more notoriety. Excellent example of a traditional porter.

The beer is dark, murky and brown. It has a creamy, beige head that sticks around for quite awhile. The aroma has sweet cocoa upfront with some cola and mineral/pine hops. It has some bready, toffee-ish malt tones backing up the darker and hoppier notes. The taste is much more full and rich than the aroma. There’s a big sweet coffee/chocolate note backed up by caramel maltiness. The finish is fairly bitter with a nice hop bite. It’s a smooth, full flavor, and the beer drinks bigger than the abv. Mouthfeel is smooth, creamy and a bit bracing in the finish. Very good and interesting beer. I would actually prefer it to be a bit less hoppy, though the hops were actually weaker than expected.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a thin tan head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, nuts, and some citrusy hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, lemonpeal, and straw, leading to a very bitter finish.
