Bottled. Deep brown colour with a mediumsized beigeish brown head, that leaves some lace. Aroma is sweet malts, toffee, coffee, chocolate and some roasted notes. Flavour is chocolate, roasted, some coffee, toffee and also some nutty notes. Mild alcohol feel to it. Bodied and really balanced. Smooth and nicely bodied.

Bottle thanks to WillRunForBeer! Pours quite hazy hazel, medium creamy tan head, slow dissipation, nice lacing. Aroma is super roasty, hints of tobacco, cocoa. Flavor is hella roasty, not really burned, some tobacco and cocoa as well, hints of grassy hops. Light plus sweet, medium bitter. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. Lingering bitterness. Interesting.

22oz bottle pours a translucent mahogany amber with some clumpy white head. Nose is nutty, toasty, significant hop presence, malt. Flavor has sonera bitterness, not just hop bitterness but also roasted coffee bitterness, brown sugar, toasted bread, brown bread, bread crust. Dry, bitter finish. Old school.

Opaque black - brown beer. Good fluffy pale tan head. Palate is crispy but dry. Dark malt with coffee bitterness and a little roast. Minerals. Trace of estery banana. Mild hop bitterness with a little orange in there. Dry and bitter finish. Fair bit of coffee in the aftertaste. Tastes olde worlde in as much as it’s rough round the edges - but that’s the point I guess. Interesting blast from the past!

22 ounce bottle thanks to Michael. Pours a dark ruddy color with a large brown and orange head. A sweet hoppy nose with chocolate malts. A rich brew with lots of Black IPA notes- very fruity and bitter hops-, but the dryness and rich porter elements stand out stronger. Easygoing and displaying a subtlety that evades most brews in this style today. 1855 the first bridge over the Mississippi was built, Penn State was founded and Livingston saw Victoria Falls. This beer was good then and now.

Bottle at the Beer, Bocce and Boozer tasting, London. Pours brown with a creamy beige head. Dusty cocoa on the nose with faint roasted malts. Nice, balanced flavor, fairly roasty, medium sweet with light earth, pine and toast. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Some nice roastiness in the finish with dark, bittersweet cocoa and moderate sweetness. Solid beer.
