Rich and seductively smooth with complex chocolate and roasted flavors and hints of dark fruit. We conjure this by squeezing the life from two-row pale malts, chocolate and caramel malts and roasted barley. Then we boil their spirits with East Kent Golding hops, and unleash an English ale yeast to feast upon and transform the remains. What emerges is a black deity-sized libation that will be your portal to the dark side.

Russian Imperial Stouts were first brewed in the 1800s to appeal to the Russian Czars. The high alcohol content was very, very appealing, and also made long-distance transport possible in those days. Insidious is just as big - tipping the huge, deep roasted malts toward a chocolatey, raisiny-molasses over a bed of leafy hops. Served on Nitro for an ultra-smooth sipper.

750 ml corked and caged bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown color. Moderate sized creamy tan head disappates slowly. Aroma has notes of coffee, molasses and licorice. First sip yields coffee and molasses notes. Bittersweet chocolate lingers on the tongue in the midtaste. Resiny hops in finish. Some tangy yeastiness throughout. Lacks the intensity and complexity typical of high quality Imperial Stouts. Good, not great.

Got in a BIF from JNForsyth. 750 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Cork did not pop upon opening, extremely low carbonation. Pours fairly pitch black color with a minimal tan lace cap that reduces to nothing pretty quickly. Some very slight spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, molasses, light char, raisin, plum, light licorice, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and light-moderate dark fruit notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, molasses, light char, raisin, plum, light licorice, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, molasses, light char, raisin, plum, light licorice, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and light-moderate dark fruit flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Minimal carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly slick/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice Imperial stout. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and light-moderate dark fruit flavors; and very smooth to sip on even with the lacking carbonation. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle at home, 23/02/13, thanks to an IP trade with Kurt from NY. Corked bomber and the cork did not want to depart by natural means, even when I had my teeth around it I thought it would snap - call for corkscrew! Mid black/extremely dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that soon dissipates leaving a light swirl and some edgeing. Nose is big on chocolate maltesers, molasses, leather, touch of coffee. Taste comprises roast malt, chocolate, brown sugars, tar, molasses, touch of hops in the background. Full bodied, soft carbonation, touch of booze in the finish. Decent Imperial Stout.

Corked and caged 750mL that I believe my friend jcwattsrugger just gave me for the heck of it at one point. John, you’re awesome, thanks. It pours very dark with a mocha colored head of foam. The aroma offers up pretty darn rich malts to dark roasted malts to faintly burnt malts and then aged sort of earthy malts with a dash of chocolate. The taste begins smooth modestly creamy with dark roasted malts, chocolate, faint spicy black licorice and molasses. Into the finish a subtle booziness is noticed. This is tasty stuff.

Tasting at Papsø’s, corked bottle
Black color, with a medium sized brownish head, and short retention. The aroma is chocolatey, with some roasted malt, mild coffee, cream; well blended. Medium body strength, with a lean mouthfeel; strong flavor of roasted malts, followed by some chocolate and coffee, also some oxidisation, light sourness from the roasted malts, light phenol; it ends drier with some woody astringency. Good without being exciting.

750 ml bottle cellared for just over a year. Paid $9.99 @ Liquor Outlet Wine Cellars, Boonton, NJ. Snifter shows pitch black color with nice, sizable tan head. Respectable lace. Nose is mostly roasted malt and dark fruit. (prunes) and a wisp of chocolate. Flavors follow the nose exactly. Medium body. Creamy, dry texture. One big detraction is even after sitting awhile, I still pick up the ABV. Although it does supply a nice warming sensation. Overall it is ok but… nothing real exceptional.
