The secret to Rumrunner lies in the barrel. Rich, full-bodied and intriguing. Newfoundland Screeech barrels were the inspiration for this semi-dry sparkling cider, which opens up to reveal complex nptes of brown sugar, rum and vanilla.

750mL bottle, pours a mostly clear amber orange with a tiny, quickly-dissipating white head. Aroma is very potent, revealing vanilla, bourbon barrels, rum, brown sugar, slight vinegary tartness and sweet apples. Flavour is equally complex, with upfront notes of apple tartness, and vinegary acidity, with secondary notes of bourbon barrels, rum, and vanilla. Medium sweetness, but it is balanced nicely with the acidity. The vinegary acidity quality lingers with the rum and barrels, and a medium alcohol burn. Very enjoyable.

Vintage 2008, bottle from Firefly, Maple Ridge, 12% ABVHazy amber color with red hue. Very nice apple aroma, some wood, caramelized sugars, light vanilla, very light rum. Good body strength, the mouthfeel is quite round, with moderate residual sugars; the cider carries some mild acidity too, apple skins and apple juice flavor, but the cider and the rum don’t blend very well here, or the acidity and the rum maybe. Not bad, but somehow strange.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of fiulijn. Pours amber with a slight haze and no real head. Pleasantly inteanse aroma of sweet apples, brown sugar and....rum?. Medium body, low carbonation, pleasant notes of intense, overripe apples. Slightly tart and again a subtle edge of the rum barrel. Lovely indeed, bordering Ice Cider territory. 180911
