Lovibond’s 1864 XXXX is a facinating insight into the lost world of nineteenth century strong ales. These were exactly the kind of beers that failed to survive the triple blow of Temperance, the Boer War and the Great War. They were also beers that were greatly prized and appreciated by our great grandfathers, who would have thought nothing of placing a bottle on the dining room table.

Tasting at Papsø’s, corked bottle 8/120
Hazy dark blond color, small head. Light aroma, some malt and vegetables. Sweet flavor, some malt, some yeast and vegetables, correct bitterness, and quite evident alcohol feeling. Drinkable but not very professional.

Bottled. A hazy dark golden beer with no head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and a bit of fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, honey, wet hay, and malt, leading to a dry finish. Odd.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of madmitch76. Bottle # 8/120. Pours a hazy golden with hardly any head at all. Subtle fruity aroma. Solid body, close to completely flat, sweet fruits, phenols and British hops. Almost syrupy. Rather primitive hop finish. Poor. 180911

Bottle 4/120. Hazy amber beer, small bubbly white head. Dry palate. smooth and low carbonation. Dry malt. Resinous hop - orange and grapefruit leading to a dry bitterness. Very dry finish. Normally I’m not fond of a beer so dry but the resinous hop kept me coming back again and again and within a disgracefully short amount of time I had polished the whole 750 off! A drinkable and tasty beer!
