Winds are powerful in their grace.
Our Wheatland community sits in the Piedmont region of the Appalachians and we get a good bit of wind every now and again. While the gusts arrive uninvited, the breezes are most welcome.
Enter Westerly, named for the winds that move across our farm. These winds that may well have carried the yeast we wild-captured in our West Field — the same yeast we used to open ferment this Piedmont Ale.
What’s Piedmont Ale?
Beer has a capacity to reflect the agricultural character of its place. And our place is the Piedmont region.
What makes this beer from here?
We drew water from the natural source on our farm and combined it with a grist of Virginia grains: half we grew at Wheatland Spring and the other half from another small farm nearby. The wort was open fermented in our barn loft with yeast native to our West Field that we wild-captured. Collectively, these ingredients and methods anchor this beer here, so it could only be a Piedmont Ale.
