Our prize-winning mead - Gold medal award winner in the Speciality Category at the 2006 International Mead Festival in Boulder, Colorado.

A semi sweet mead (approx 20g/l residual sugar) with rooibos, honeybush tea, cinnamon and apple. The herbs provide a smooth structure to the mead with a lingering honey aftertaste. Ideally served at 12-14 degrees Celsius, in a large red wine glass to allow development of the nose.

A good stand alone sundowner, a well matched partner to spicy dishes and stir fries, game and poultry and a companion to desserts and coffees.

Bottle served cold @TreeRock. Clear, vibrant gold. Lacey pour. Strong, boozy, buckwheat-like dark honey & sweet licorice nose. Re-fermenting, slight bubbles. Sharp apple sourness, cinnamon, ginger, cherry pit tannins. Not a pristine example, but still tasty.

Bottle at Tree Rock, pours a clear golden yellow, no head. Nose brings out subdued herbal notes and light honey nectar. Flavour is along the same lines, with a wonderful honey nectar character, with light herbal notes and some spices. Nicely crafted. Interesting.

Sampled at Vintage Estate this mead poured a dark tan-brown color. The aroma was vinegar and tea. The flavor was vinegar, honey, tea, mild vague herbs and an earthy presence. Very long vinegar finish. Moderately full bodied. Not good.

Bottle at home. I’ve had zymatore versions of this mead but needed to try original for comparison and the south Africa tick. Pours orange with lovely nose of honey and perfume. Tastes of honey but not too sweet, herbal, perfume, red fruit, apples, and boat loads of rooibos tea (which I love). Really drinkable and good mead.
