A delightful Scottish beer inspired by a brewing book from 1847 where there is a story about a beer that is “clear and very brisk, and, consequently, very agreeable to the palate." - see opposite.

Our modern interpretation of this beer uses four different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Chocolate and Roast Barley).

Hops are added in small quantities in two stages to ensure that the malt character typical of Scottish ales is not overwhelmed.

Cask at Guildford Arms. It pours deep brown with a decent beige head. The nose is brown bread, wood, dried fruits, boiled sweets and toffee. The taste is bitter, toasty grain, brown bread, earth, light toffee, candy and dirt with a dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Fairly basic, but drinkable enough.

330ml bottle Appellation Wines. Pours clear chestnut brown, no head. Aromas are dark sugar, roasted nuts, light smoke. Taste has a dark chocolate sweetness, more sugar, and light herbal bitterness. would like to try on cask, but a bit disappointing bottled.
