Only 120 precious barrels were brewed, adding more than half a ton of extra malt and twice the amount of Amarillo hops, so prepare your self for a full sensory explosion. The double dry-hop addition elevates the grapefruit-like aroma and flavor to an outrageous intensity, while the added malt raises the alcohol level from 7% all the way to 10% by volume.

From Notes. Nitro tap at Hangar. A little heavy on the malt for my taste. Lots of citrus and caramel. The alcohol is dangerously well hidden. I would like to try this guy out of a bottle. I’m not a big fan of nitro and this beer seemed way to cold to be appropriate.

Tap at Rattle’N’Hum, Manhattan - 02/03/12. Pours a hazy orange colour with a small head. Citrus and pine, a little floral hops, not that strong a nose! Plenty of citrus hops in the taste, a little sweet sugar and malt. Medium bodied with a sticky mouthfeel and warming alcohol in the finish. Not the best in this style but drinkable!

Bottle. Clear, amber liquid with small to medium off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit, mango, passionfruit, caramel, resin/pine and sweet malt. Taste is light sweet and medium bitter notes with sweet caramely malt and some grassy/fruity hops. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Average DIPA, nothing outstanding.

Served on nitro (which I thought a bit weird) at Thirsty Monk South. Pours a clear copper color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of grapefruit, tropical fruits and pale malts. The taste is very similar with watermelon and peppery notes as well. Medium bodied.

Slightly hazy crisp copper coloured body with a light golden hue and a perfect, three centimetre tall microfoamed tan head - this is the way an imperial ipa should look. Aroma of alcohol, yeast, sugars, strong grassy hops and a touch of resin. Full-bodied; Chewy malt flavour at first with some curacao and other citrus fruits, some yeast noticeable and a strong yet not overpowering hop flavour. Aftertaste shows more alcohol warmth than anything else followed soon behind by the malt and perhaps a bit of the resiny and chewy hops come through at the end, just for bitterness. Overall, a very strong and powerful imperial ipa with most of the flavour from the malt and alcohol rather than the hops. Still, a well made beer and good to sample if you like the style! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 16-February-2012 for US$4.49 sampled at home in Washington on 24-February-2012.
