Dark sour ale aged in Leopold Bros whiskey barrels

A demonic dark sour, Nightmare on Brett takes on many facets during its transformation to the sour side. Initially aged in large oak foeders with our mixed culture of wild yeast and bacteria, this beer is then transferred to bourbon and whiskey barrels. The various spirit barrels bring on a new life to this beer as it conditions for months, while obtaining additional bourbon and whiskey characteristics. Dominated by dark fruit aromas and flavors, the underlying cacao notes meld with an acidic tart berry finish. With each batch release being a unique blend of barrels, the multiple variations of Nightmare on Brett released throughout the year prove that with creativity and experimentation, anything is possible.

Dark beige head soon left a cover on a near black still body. Oaky vinous aroma. Medium to thin bodied, spritely on the palate with a tingle on the back. Vinous tastes with malt, coffee, whisky, sour berries & a long tangy finish

Dark sour aged on bourbon and whisky barrels, bottle at Gollem in Antwerp, thanks to my girlfriend Goedele for sharing! Medium thick, pale greyish beige, lightly lacing head over a very dark burgundy coloured beer, almost blackish. Aroma of balsamico, passion fruit, blackcurrant, walnuts, moldy hazelnuts, very old red wine, whisky, sour cherries, elderberry juice, tea, wet leather. Estery onset, blackcurrant and sour cherry, sour grapes, thin sweeter fig note, balsamico-like edges, softish carbo. Nut shell- and hard caramel-like malt body with a bittering black chocolate edge towards the end, dried by ongoing tartness but not overly acidic, yet still a tad (too?) vinegary in the end; balsamico note remains present till deep into the finish, drying wood notes, whisky flavours (more so than bourbon); coarse old dry red wine effect lingers. Interesting, bit intense for many perhaps, but I can appreciate a good 'sour stout' - a concept not generally accepted - every now and then and Crooked Stave is always a trustworthy source for above average American sour ales. Should revisit this with less fatigued tasting buds as I had this right after the MEUG festival...

750 ml bottle shared by PowY, thanks!
Dark brown body, with a smaller, creamy, beige head.
Aroma of vinegar, barrel, dried fruits, overripe fruits, some cocoa.
Tastes similar, with a bit more funk.
Medium, slick mouthfeel, with an average carbonation.
Finishes acidic, wooden, fruity, with dark fruits, some vinegar, a bit leathery,

Very nice. Quite sour, with a vinegar note throughout, maybe a bit too much for me. Very nice dark fruits though. I don't get much of the whiskey, just some wooden barrel notes. Not among my favourite beers by this brewery, but nice nonetheless.

On tap at Brewdog Doghouse, Glasgow in the company of Nick and Anna, Friday 9th February 2018. Its very gloomy in here so difficult to be sure on colour, dark reddy brown (I think) sour, woody and tart, not unlikely a good Rodenbach. Sharp and zaps you on the way down, woody, fruity, sharp berries. This does not taste 9.7% . Lovely beer. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 3.9
