Black with a ruby glint. The herbal, prickly nose leads into a smooth roasty body. Some grain and dark toast. Firmly bitter. A seriously drinkable jet-black stout.

Bottle from Chester Beer and Wine. Now labelled just 'Lakeland Stout' but the description is the same. Pours black with moderate sized beige head. Aroma of toffee, molasses, biscuits, light jammy hints. Taste of molasses, burnt toast ends, brown bread, slightly herbal bitter and dry finish. Occasional jammy notes come through to give contrast. Light to medium bodied, dry. Good stuff.

Bottle from Rheged. Appearance - opaque black with an olive sheen and a lovely fawn head. Nose - light fudge and biscuit. Dark chocolate sticks it's head in eventually. Maybe molasses. Taste - liquorice, molasses and burnt bread. Savoury liquorice finish. Palate - light to medium bodied. Dry crunchy middle section. Dry burnt finish. Overall - very good. Is this dry enough to be called a dry stout. Many normal stouts are drier than this.

Bottle @Il Santo Bevitore (Rome). Deep brown with a big light beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, light mocha, hops, grass, seaweed, wow! Flavour is moderate sweet with a good bitter end, messy notes of chocolate and coffee, bitter and dry end with a touch of smoke and sea salt. Light carbonation. So easy to drink but rich and pleasant! A jewel!
