Visitors to Smuttynose Island, peering across the dark waters of Gosport Harbor towards the ragged rocks of neighboring Star Island, are sometimes startled by the fleeting sight of mysterious, alluring creatures swept up from the Atlantic’s cold, inky depths. Or so they tell us.
Our Star Island Single is an eminently sessionable, abbey-style ale offering a beguiling mix of flavor and refreshment. This medium-bodied golden ale features a slight residual sweetness from Honey Malt and hints of citrus and tropical fruits from the unique Belgian yeast it is fermented with, leaving a crisp dry finish. Enjoy it sociably while you savor good times, tall tales, friendly company & life’s unexpected pleasures.

Rating from old notes. Bottle, fairly shortly after release, probably in 2008 or 2009.
Clear, waxy-yellow. Small-to-medium, white head, moderate retention.
Good mix of honey-like malt and a fair bit of black pepper-like phenol but not too clovey. Some light wax and vanilla notes creep in.
Zesty and spicy with tons of peppery phenol and a solid, malty texture. Clean and drying out moderately on the finish. No big crude phenols/esters.

Slightly hazy golden color, medium small head, decent lacing. Coriander and yeast aroma. Coriander, yeast, light malt and spices. Slightly sour, sweet and bitter. Light and easy to drink. Good for what it is. Enjoyed it. Worth a try...

Bottle. Pours light hazy golden with a small white head. Smells of metal (bloody), light fruit. Meh flavor. Not much to write home about. Sour, spoiled banana, wheat, funy bubblegum.

Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a tulip and a snifter. There weren’t any significant changes in either one.
The appearance had a decent one finger white foamy over coating the top of pale hazy golden yellow to somewhat of an orange color. The head dissipated within less than about forty seconds and left an ample amount of sliding lightly foamy lacing.
The smell had a light florally coated earthy spices over top of a light sweet herbalness.
The taste had a light sweet floral behavior about it that had a light cough drop-like flavoring.
On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a fairly good sessionability about it. The carbonation was somewhat harsh and pummeling.
Overall, this was not one of my more favorites brews by Smuttynose. I don’t miss this one.

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein leicht trübes goldenes Bier mit ordentlicher Schaumkrone. Geruch hefig, malzig süß, leicht würzig. Geschmack leicht hefig, fruchtig malzig, Gewürze, blumig.

355ml bottle at home. Pours hazy yellow with a decent white head. Gentle aromas of yeast and cereal, only a faint hint of spice. Taste is smooth and lightly sweet. Bitter taste develops. Not bad.

Still wrapping up notes from the 2011 Midwest Brewers Fest. Tawny yellow color beer. A little bit of head from a small bottle pour. Nose has some bubblegum ester and some yeast to it. Nice Belgian dubbel flavor of light malts and more ester, no distinctive hops. Just settles in very well as a session ale.

Bottle. Pours clear pale golden with small white head. Clear aroma of hops, malt with touches of citrus. Bitter, hoppy flavour with a sweetish malty flavour and a subtle roasty note. Grainy aftretaste. OK but a little dusty and a trifle unbalanced.
