Crafted by Virginia homebrewer, Rodger Thurlow, Hop'Easter won the Gold Medal at Starr Hill's 2017 IPA JamBEERee Homebrew Competition. This batch was brewed on Starr Hill's full-scale production system, using a near replication of Thurlow’s original recipe, to bring his IPA to life. Massive amounts of dry-hopping before fermentation accentuates hop aroma and flavor without adding bitterness, as compared to regular India Pale Ales. This hazy, juicy NE-style IPA is loaded with tropical fruits like pineapple, mango and passion fruit. The malts rounds out the experience with a smooth mouthfeel that really emphasizes the hops.

Fairly clear with a slight haze to a golden coloured body with a peach and orange glow. Aroma of guava, mangoes and a heavy hand of grapefruit and more bitter citrus fruits. Medium-bodied; Assertive grassy and very citrusey flavours at first with a big dash of bitterness, grain and supportive malt. Strong hop elements that shows on the bitter and dry, grassy side of things then hit hard as well. Aftertaste shows the bitterness with a dry and herbal flavour, all with some nice tropical fruits that are slightly bitter, but all show balance by the pungent malt - but any sweetness at all is nowhere to be found in this one. Aftertaste shows the proper balance with the light fruity elements, but definitely more in terms of bitterness from the grass and citrusey hops which are nice, but overpower the mango and light tropical fruit flavours towards the end. Overall, a respectable beer that is decent in terms of flavour profiles, but not too comparable to others in terms of balance and complexities. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from Lidl (labeled as 'Hypnotic Beast, Tropical IPA, 6,8%abv) in Manassas, Virginia on 13-March-2019 for US$5,99/six pack, sampled at home in Washington on 05-May-2019.
