Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

On Tap at Mr. Beery’s in Sarasota. Pours clear amber with copper edges and tan head. The aroma is light initially and then one pull brought up a sliver of caramel and then ample amounts of dark fruity goodness, some raisin, a touch of pepper and mild roasted malts. The taste is smooth and Alt – ishly thin with sweet malts running into prunes, raisins and then a touch of roasted malts. Nice Alt.

Bottle: Pours a dark copper with a minimal sandy head. Nose is dry florals and bready malt. A little sweetness from the malt, caramel and just lightly bready. Seemingly whole grains? More florals and just a hint of grass. Some bitterness in the tail.

Bottled@Monks Café Sveavägen, Stockholm. Amber colour, not much head. Aroma is caramel, some mild toffee, grass and herbal notes. Flavour is wood, sweetness and some slight earthyness and fruits. Quite far from any Alt I’ve had before...

Pretty good beer. Bottle from Whole Foods. Pours a light brown with almost no head and little lace retention. Faint aroma, almost undetectable, of light and sweet malts. Flavor is interesting, not like my usual fare. Sweet and malty up front with - what’s that? - some traces of fruitiness. After the initial taste the flavor morphs into something more bitter with some noticeable hop character. Light to medium in body with nice carbonation. This beer leaves a slightly bitter, sticky aftertaste, somewhat akin to an IPA. Very sneaky, Mr. Altbier. I’ll have to try this again.

Bottled at Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm. Clearnut broen, small head. Buttery nose. Mid-sweet with medium body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Lightly roasty, never earthy nor soft. Feels like a simple sketch of an altbier.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Gilly's, 7/16/09
Aroma: Mostly caramel, toasted, malty, sweet, dark fruits
Appearance: Clear dark reddish-copper color, thin off-white head
Flavor: Sweet and malty, similar to the nose, minimal hop presence
Palate: Medium body
Overall Impression: This is a nice beer, heavy on the caramel malts, and not a lot else. It is still tasty, but not overly complex or powerful.

12oz bottle–pours a rich light tan head and amber/copper color. Aroma is medium malt-bready/caramel, earthy hops, nutty, slight fruity. As it warms, some peat/chocolate. Taste is medium malt-caramel, notes of sour fruit, secondary earthy hops. Thanks to jwc215 for sharing.

12 ounce bottle from Bruisin Ales. Pours a clear ruby red color with a medium head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of toffee, some nutty chocolate notes and a bit of a hoppy finish. Taste is caramel, toffee, chocolate, raisin and a fairly strong hop finish. Medium bodied and refreshing, though a little uneven. Quite a nice alt.
