Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Bottle, 12 oz. Pours ok with a light head, clear color, smells malty and pretty good, but the taste doesn’t match and I found it rather watery. Maybe I was just spoiled from all the other fine and dandy Southampton brews but this one I didn’t find that interesting.

Poured from 12 oz.bottle(room temp) a nice deep gold with a fairly large head of foam that dissipated slowly leaving about a 1/8" layer in my brand new Secret Ale glass. ;^)
The smell is sweet to my nose telling me there's some malt character there.
The taste is definitely malty up front but it's not at all sugary sweet and then..there's the hop character moving in with the offsetting bitterness(I sense some lemon notes) creating a nicely balanced and very drinkeable Alt beer of which, I must admit, I've had very limited exposure to.(Alaskan Amber and a German brew whose name escapes me)
Bottom line: This is a very smooth yet tasty brew that would be on my regular rotation if it were available to me locally. My thanks to Nutbrown for including this in our trade!

Toffee aroma. Clear orange brown, thin yellow head. Grassy toffee flavor, more bitter than sweet. Relatively bland.

12 oz bottle. Deep red/ brown, like Mahogany wood. Real hazy and dark. Thick, full creamy white head. Good amount of carbonation. Lots of grainy type smell. Strong malt base with grain and a corn like taste. Lots of malt and hops. VERY easy to drink. Reminds me of a good Bock. Very well made. If you get a fresh bottle, it is a great example of the style. I will buy this again.

Pours dull and groggy, as the beer is hungover, and the head forgoes foaminess for fizziness. Smells of toffee, malt, and mouldering grains. The malts are nice, nutty and deep, but are bookended by bubbly saccharine unpleasantness, which kills both sides of the brew. Overcarbonated and sharp, don’t let this bottle be your introduction to Altbiers. (6/5/09)

Bottle, 12oz, courtesy of Enjoyit. A clear, dark copper body with an off-white head. Caramel maltyness on the nose, slightly roasted. A tad fruityness too. Dry on the palate, medium body. The flavor has caramel, some roasted malts and a hint of nuts. Nothing very interesting, but quite tasteful anyway. 110129
