Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Good palate with lots of malt. Smooth. True to style, but there is not much to say about this simple, drinkable session beer.

Bottle as Altbier, @ Redlight Redlight. This is a bottle full of WIN. Deep bronze color, firm head. Nose is pungent with a deep melanoidin malt that hints at a vinous fruitiness somewhat reminscent of port wine - but then its coupled with a strongly perfumed floral hop. Man, this is just a dead on altbier flavor with a nice creamy palate, firm malt presence (toffee, cookies, brown sugar) and a serious hop bitterness. Hop flavoring tends to floral. Long bitter finish. They just nailed it.

Deep dark copper coloured body with a brownish tint and almost no head at all. Aroma of cardboard, malt, a little bit of cherries and no hops. Light to Medium-bodied; Super sharp and funky bittering malt flavour with no hops or anything else. Aftertaste is mouth-puckeringly bitter but from metal and stale malt. Overall, not a good beer in the slightest...definitely pass this one up for a REAL Southampton! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from a small pizza shop in New Paltz, New York on 20-December-2005.

(10/25/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in Southampton. Says 5.2% on the board. Clear copper color. Aroma of malt, toasted notes and a bit of hops. Sweetish malty flavor with a bit of toastiness, caramel, and dry hoppy finish with some herbal notes. Medium-bodied.

Pours a beige head and leaves lacing. Reddish brown clear body. Malty aroma. Like the guy before me, I wondered if the beer was fresh. Kind of sour taste. Very light hops in the middle. Kind of sweet aftertaste. Some fruitiness, but nothing distinct.

12oz bottle. Coppery brown color. Sweet malt dominates the flavor, with a nice faint hop balance. Creamy and rich, not unlike a good brown ale, but with a crisper taste. A great session beer, could fit right in on the Altstadt.

Bottle. Dark copper pour with a nice, but dminishing off-white head. Malty, yeasty nose of bread, sweet caramel, dough and light grassy hops. The flavor is more sweet than bitter, but does finish with a light bite. Medium body and watery texture. Plenty of carbonation. Slightly sticky at the end. Not the strongest Southampton beer I’ve had. Could take or leave it.

Bottle. Amber brown color. Aroma is sweet caramels. Flavor is similar, with caramel and hops being the main portion of this beverage. Decent Altbier.

I am a big fan of Southampton and laud almost all of their products... almost. I remember when this just came out a couple of years ago and I found it in a regular supermarket, right next to the Stroh’s I was buying at the time *hey 15 pack for 6.50, while in college is too hard to pass up). Well, I was extremely disappointed then and nothing better has come of this beer since. 12 oz bottle poured into a small goblet glass. Pours decent enough with a medium head and a clear brown body (a bit orangish in direct light). I put my nose to the beer, aroma is corn, lagered fruitiness, lightly estery, lightly nutty and sweet, and faintly nasty. I can see where this is heading. Taste is lightly mineral, again nutty nuttiness, leaves a woodsy macor-ish aftertaste. Definitely full of flavors but just some uninteresting ones. A light beer, very easy drinking, but completely uninteresting. There is definitely is no secret here, it s beer made for the masses to compete with Newcastle.
