Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of Ungstrup. Pours ever so slightly hazy, amber golden with a creamy, off-white head leaving laces. Lightly sweet malt aroma. Medium body with vague caramel notes and a dry finish. Decent if not exactly thrilling. 310507

Bottled. A hazy orange beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of caramel - and so is the flavor too with a slightly bitter finish.

(bottle, with thanks to Saarlander!) Slightly hazy, amber colour with a small creamy, off-white layer. Dusty, sweet toast-malty aroma with toffee and spicy notes of liquorice. Sweet-bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a moderate to crispy carbonation. Toast-malty, slightly fruity, nutty taste with toffee; dry, malty, nutty and slightly bitter finish with light notes of herbal hops. Decent Alt, and my first one from the U.S.

7/7/08: rerated recently as Altbier. Rootbeer color. Lots of rolling carbonation from a 12 oz bottle. Aroma is candylike Relatively kind on the palate. Has a mild bitterness which is also relatively kind. As the session continues, there is a building bitterness on the back of the throat. Finish is mild building to medium linger that hangs for a while. Previous rating: I am a little bit pissed I already tried this as Southampton Altbier. 12 oz bottle. Pours with the appearance of a light root beer, with lots of bubbles coming up. No appreciating head. Smells a little sweet and yeasty. Slight malt and almost sweet root beer taste. Can’t detect much bitterness if any. Nice slight tingly carbonation on the back of my tongue. Has a very enjoyable finish, however, it has a small amount of bitterness that lingers. Overall, nice beer. I think I like the Alt style, erie’s heritage alt was good too! SECOND RATING 8/25/07: On tap at the Bocktown. Very enjoyable! Mild as many witbiers, but without the spice. Very little bitterness on the finish, if any.Reminds me of many scottish ales.

Poured a transparent copper from the bottle with a clumpy off white head. Yeasty, grainy smell, sweet though. Sweet malt flavor, hints of molassas and caramel. Smooth, watery finish. Nothing complex but highly drinkable.

Slightly reddish brown body with a bunch of lacing left by a mediocre head. Aromas are unispiring... maybe some caramel, mabye some nuts, but nothing really exciting. Flavor is much better than I would have guessed with our phenomenal start. Nice nutty flavoring with some lightly roasted malt presence and a touch of toffee like sweetness. Comes off a bit watery every now and again, but some sips seem much fuller than others... perplexing, to say the least.

Sampled at From The Vine beer tasting Sep 22nd, 2006: Well the secret is out and I’m not quite sure why it was a secret in the first place, as this is a pretty run-of-the-mill Altbier. Pours dark clear brown with a compact light tan head that lingers. Patchy lacing. The aroma is nutty and malty.Medium-bodied and smooth with a toasted malt and hops flavor, along with some nuts. The finish is nutty with a lingering hops aftertaste. Thoroughly average.

Bottle on 01/02/2011. Clear dark amber body with a medium creamy off-white head. Sweet caramel and toasty malt aroma. Toasty malt, caramel, and slight bready flavor. Medium body with moderate carbonation. 7/4/7/3/13 - 3.4 02/27/2006 - Clear dark amber color. Sweet malt aroma with a touch of grassiness. Flavor is sweet but the grassiness is somewhat detracting. 6/3/6/3/12 - 3.0

This is the first beer I have had from this company. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a rich mahogany color with a large tan head. The aroma is sour, malty and nutty with a hint of chocolate. The flavor is sour and bitter with a fruity and nutty undertone and a hint of chocolate on the finish.
