Most folks from the Northeast go to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with a crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip? Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for an altbier that will surprise your senses. One taste and you’ll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.

Dark golden ale with a small off-white head. Light malt aroma with skunks notes (hops?). Rather dry malt with classy german hops. Rather disappointing for Southampton. May 2005.

Bottle. Pours light brown with a dusting of a head. Smells of malts, laundry soap, and tea. Thin flavor... very thin. Light flavor of malts that fades... gone. Nothing else.

Deep copper-orange body, puffy off-white head. Grassy, cerealy aroma with a touch of toast and caramel. Crisp body, dominated by grassy, earthy hops and balanced by light toast, fruit, and caramels in the backdrop. Bitter finish with definite metallic "copper penny" notes. Not mind-blowing, but quaffable and dependable. Thanks Dan (jah noth) for the latest wave of beers!

Clear rich copper color with a tall off white head. A bit of doughy malt aroma. Well balanced with a slightly bitter finish. Not really impressive, although being quite drinkable.

2004 bottle from BOTW courtesy of GoldenSpunky. Pours a dark copper-amber color, with a trace of whispy white head. Aroma is very coppery, with sourish notes, metal and some dry carapils malt notes and a hint of some honey-like sweetness. Flavor gets right in your face immediately. It packs in the german yeast flavor, has a good grainy bite to it and lots of trailing bitterness as it goes down. A tremendously drinkable and quenching rendition. I could handle a bit more malt sweetness, but it’s still quite good.

(draught) Dark amber; light fluffy white head. Slight bitterish hoppy nose spiking on a very malty basesmell - quite aromatic. Very malty in the best way, roasted flakes, grain, wholemeal. Very well-bodied, slick mouthfeel. Good beer - little Alt-y. Let's say I keep preferring Z. Uerige Sticke.

This was a bit on the uneventful side. Penny/copper color, spices in the nose. Slight hops and slight maltiness...slight everything actually. A beer that didn't try hard enough to get my attention.
