At Heavy Seas, we brew a traditional English-style pale ale with our own East Coast twist: UK Fuggles and Goldings dominate the flavor of Powder Monkey, but has subtle notes of citrus and flower from Cascade hops added in the boil and hopback. Brass in color, Powder Monkey, like all of our beers, is well balanced: distinct bitterness and a slight malt sweetness characterize the taste. In 2010, it won a bronze medal at the World Beer Cup; in 2008, it won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival.

OK for style, meaning this is properly boring but easy to drink. Dark amber pour with good head and lacing. Light bitter finish. Some mash malt. Some light citrus peel, but not super well integrated. Tap at Rosslyn brewpub.

Cask @ Albion. Murky dark amber with medium sized beige foamy head, doughy aroma, sweetish taste, low carbonation, thin body, long bitter finish. Typical bitter.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 2/2/2015. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a nice 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of lemon, orange zest, pear, apple, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of bready malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, orange zest, pear, apple, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon/orange zest, pear, apple, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Good robustness and balance of bready malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 4.8%. Overall this is a very solid English pale ale. All around good robustness and balance of bready malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Of the three heavy seas beers ice tries so far, this is the one so far that seems like a let down. Better than most American lagers, but otherwise I would not necessarily reach for it.
