At Heavy Seas, we brew a traditional English-style pale ale with our own East Coast twist: UK Fuggles and Goldings dominate the flavor of Powder Monkey, but has subtle notes of citrus and flower from Cascade hops added in the boil and hopback. Brass in color, Powder Monkey, like all of our beers, is well balanced: distinct bitterness and a slight malt sweetness characterize the taste. In 2010, it won a bronze medal at the World Beer Cup; in 2008, it won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival.

Draft at GBBF 2013 - London. Pours clear gold with a light, creamy head. Doughy and lightly buttery malts abound with fine, rindy lemon bitterness. Light in body with fine carbonation. Doughy malts to finish, little else. Not altogether bad but pretty uninspiring.

12oz bottle. Filtered orange-amber body. Thin, oily head. Probably a little past its prime, the aroma is a touch faded and bland. Toffee tinged malt tones, some English feel, but more of a 90s US brewpub feel. Pretty unimpressive, definitely glad I didn’t scoop up a six pack.

Pours deep amber into a Sam glass. Off-white micro head with good retention recedes leaving spider lacing to coat surface. Soap and candy corn aromas. Dry with caramel and candy corn front to back. Medium length bitter earth finish.

Cask at GBBF 2013. It pours golden amber with a small white head. The nose is sticky, floral, honey, faint citrus and hay. The taste is sweet, grainy, dough, cereal, honey, floral, citrus pith and light alcohol with a dry finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Forgettable. Very so-so.

Harris Teeter, DC sixer ($8): Pours a copper color with a small white head. Aroma is earthy and malty. Taste is way more on the malty side. Hops take second whistle. Like others have noted, this beer has a pretty British character to it. Very drinkable and sessionable. Mild aftertaste from the British hops. Slight bitterness.

Bottle from a Kroger. Pours a clear amber color with a medium creamy offwhite head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel malts, some toastiness and floral hops. The taste is toasted malts, caramel, floral hops, a bit of citrus and berry and a bitter finish. Medium bodied. Moderate carbonation. Good beer. Surprised I haven’t had this yet given how readily available it is.

How could I miss this? I thought it must be news but there are ratings on here since 2003. A slight dark tint to this otherwise pale ale. A good old hoppy pale ale experience. Had some fresh fruity hop aroma and the co2 is of a good level. Aroma goes a little metallic during the session. Moer hops coming done the pike. A little sharp hop bitter bite ont he ling finish. Wants to be an ipa but falls just short. Not bad overall beer drinken experince. better than expected.
