At Heavy Seas, we brew a traditional English-style pale ale with our own East Coast twist: UK Fuggles and Goldings dominate the flavor of Powder Monkey, but has subtle notes of citrus and flower from Cascade hops added in the boil and hopback. Brass in color, Powder Monkey, like all of our beers, is well balanced: distinct bitterness and a slight malt sweetness characterize the taste. In 2010, it won a bronze medal at the World Beer Cup; in 2008, it won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival.

Bottle. Pours golden amber, lotsa bubbles, an inch of off-white head. Smells of copper and other metals and some malts. Tastes of bitter grasses, metal, leaves. Looks a lot better than it tastes.

Bottle from Half Time. Pours light copper with a transient whiteish head. Aroma seems floral/citrus. Med body. Flavor is floral/earthy/citrus over a mildly roasted caramel. Finishes a little astringent, a little malty and towards dry. It’s solid, but not spectacular. Tastier than many tho.

Kinda weak for an APA. There’s nothing offensive about it, but the flavor is a bit flat. The malt is biscuity but watered down. Some pine resin bitterness and crystal malt. It’s easy to drink, but I wouldn’t seek one out.

Cask gravity at GBBF 2010. Clear gold, thin beige head. Tea flavour, sweet, not great. Too much tea flavour for me.

This brew is a clear orange color with a medium thin off-white head that recedes steadily. Spotty lacing. Aroma of caramel malt and a touch of piney hops. Light to medium body with flavors of bready malt, mild hops and pine. The finish is lightly hopped with a short mildly bitter aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.
