Cocoa beans have been a valuable commodity for centuries, and the ancient Maya were among the first to recognize the value of cocoa. They believed that it was a gift from the gods and was imbued with mystical and healing properties. They used cocoa beans as currency and consumed them in the form of a frothy and bitter beverage known as xocolatl.
Ek Chuaj, the god of cocoa, was one of the most revered gods in Mayan culture. He was also the patron of cocoa and the protector of xocolatl. The Mayans believed that he watched over the preparation of the beverage, ensuring that it was made properly and with the right ingredients.
For the Mayans, xocolatl was more than just a drink; it was a sacred beverage that was used in various ceremonies and rituals. It was often mixed with chili peppers, a sweetener such as honey or vanilla, cinnamon, or other spices to enhance its flavor and to add to its healing properties.
Here we have taken xocolatl as inspiration for this Dark Ale. Infused with lactose, cinnamon, chili peppers, and of course, rested on cocoa nibs, it lends both a sweet and mildly spiced character to the chocolate base.
While the worship of Ek Chuaj may have faded, his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who continue to appreciate and honor the sacred traditions of the Maya people, and we hope you enjoy our rendition of Ek Chuaj's gift.
