3/8/2022. Cask at GBBF 2022, day 2. Pours clear dark maroon brown with quite a large frothy off-white to beige head. Aroma is ashy, chocolate, malt, liquorice, light milky coffee. Medium sweetness, light to moderate roasted bitterness. Moderate body, oily but watery, soft carbonation. Good but lacked body.

Bottle at home, from Beer Direct Buxton, 14/10/20. Light black with a reddish hue when held to the light and topped with a handsome khaki cap. Nose is dried fruits, dark malts, light coffee, mellow roast, hint ashen. Taste comprises roast malts, fruit cake, toffee, hint of liquorice, brown bread. Medium bodied, light prickly carbonation, drying close with a roasted coating. Decent well rounded porter.

Third, cask, 5.0 % abv, at Brighton Bierhaus. Stable fawn-coloured head leaving clingy lacing down the glass. Coal black body. Promising smell of dark dough and chocolate malts. Earthy malts to the taste buds alongside moments of liquorice and chocolate. Slightly roasted, mid-sweet malty finish. Likable. (Brighton 17.10.2019).

Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham. Poured a clear dark brown with a reddish hue and a bubbly off white head. The aroma is caramel malt, red berry fruits, coffee, chocolate. The flavour is moderate sweet, light liquorice bitter with a silky smooth rich dry roasty malt, charcoal, big dry liqouirce hop bitter palate and a long bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Cask. Fat Cat, Sheffield. As Ashover 1910 Porter. 5%. Clear, very dark, copper red. Frothy, super sticky, clotted cream coloured head. Nose has toasted malts. Hint of coconut. Dried vine fruits. Some coffee bean. Taste is a little sweet, with a dry, vinous, earthy character. Smooth mouthfeel. Fairly drying. Soft carbonation. Finish gets twangy and vinous. Don’t know if I’ve ever had a poor beer from this brewer. Probably not.

Handpull cask from the Blue Boar, Leicester. Dark brown with a slight mahogany hue. Large but loose off-white head that fades quickly. Light aroma of coffee beans, toffee, a suggestion of cooking chocolate. Complex and wonderful taste. It starts bittersweet with a touch of liquorice, then a touch of toffee as it turns slightly sweeter. Finish is incredibly dry, oaky, chocolatey and a touch vinous. Aftertaste of liquorice, blackberry and meat pie with beer gravy. This is an incredibly special porter. So many porters are too sweet, but this is the perfect antidote.
