The start of the most evil & epic beer series ever! Mephistopheles is a nasty brew. Dark as night and perversely hoppy. Brewed with roasted malts and loads of hop. Simcoe dryhop gives a big nose of over-ripe tropical fruits. Limited to 2.000 bottles. Released: October 2016.

Bottle at home. Dark brown almost opaque black with thin offwhite head. Smells hoppy. Sweet roasted malts, big fruity, resiny and marijuana grassy hops. Taste of marijuana and barley coming through the chocolatey, charcoalesque roastiness. Quite sweet at first but eventually more bitter than sweet. Medium body, low carbonation. Dry deep roasted ashy bitter finish. Nice one!

Bottle @ Van Moll Brewpub. Opaque black color, medium to full sized thick creamy tan head. Aroma is malts, old dusty malts, ash. Taste malts, dark malts, roast, very bitter. Hmm aroma has something weird (and not very pleasant) and the flavor suggests there could be a hint of tart round the corner. Not what it should be I think, so it definitely needs some work but it’s also definitely not a lost cause imo.

Bottle at home. Dark ruby-brown, clear, with a medium height tan head. Aroma includes citrus hops and some light pine resin. The taste follows the same notes, with some additional unripe mango, passion fruit, dark chocolate and subtle roasted malts. The beer has quite a harsh metallic and almost medicinal feel to it. Luckily no poo notes in this one.Later edit: actually, you can feel some weird off-notes when the beer gets just a little warmer

Tap @ In De Wildeman, small size. Dark, but not quite black, clear. Frothy off white head. Aroma’s: boiled vegetables (that I find too often in beers from the Sallandse kettles), laurel/bay leaves, a bit droppy. Retronasal there’s laurel/bay leaves, drop, sweetness and boiled vegetables. Flavor is droppy, moderate bitter with light sweetness (licorice). Medium bodied. Finishes roasty and rather bitter. Nice, apart from the vegetables.

Draft at Arendsnest. Very dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma starts with poo before moving into more familiar BIPA territory of roast, grassy hops, dark chocolate and some fruity hops. Flavour is moderate sweet and above moderate bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. A shame about the poo, drinking this reminds me of 2 girls 1 cup. Not a good thing from a BIPA..
