Pilsen Callao. By far the oldest beer in Peru, and one of the longest-lived in South America. Pilsen Callao traces its origins back to 1863, when Federico Bindels partnered with the Frenchman Aloise Kieffer to make the first beer in the then Callao port neighborhood. More than a century and a half later, it remains at the highest levels of preference in the Peruvian beer market.

Crystal clear golden coloured body with no head at all. Aroma of skunk, pale malt, light low a.a. hops and some caster sugar. Light-bodied; Light lemon taste with a small maltiness and a very subtle hoppiness. Aftertaste quick and sharp - some citrus, but mostly bitter malt. Overall, not the worst lager, but its easier to pick out off-flavours than ’on’ flavours. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 28-May-2005 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

12 oz. bottle from Sam’s Wines, Downers Grove. Despite my feeling about the Heinie-wannabes of countries without beer traditions, I’ll try ’em anyway, just to pop the cap on a new land. Now listing this as a Dortmunder means I could hold this to a higher standard than the usual pale lager… Somewhat hoppy smell at first, but then a bit of corn sugar. Head rises short, then dwindles quickly. Usual pale yellow color. I thinkthere’s a bit of Dortmunder character, but perhaps it’s just because I’m looking for it there. Taste is relatively clean, a slight touch of pilsner malt. But again, accompanied by corn adjunct. Specific bitterness hard to find. I didn’t expect much, and that’s what I got.

Pour is a very light yellow with a small white head. Aroma has a slight burnt quality but nothing else shows up after that. Flavor is also very light with hints of grain and corn. Nothing really great but on the other hand this tastes and smells like nothing so you could prob drink alot of this in Peru.

Blond color. Light malt aroma. Dry taste, with a high bitterness. So similar to Premium Cristal… reminds me that Simpson’s episode at Duff’s brewing facility…
