As with the 02.02.02 and 03.03.03, we are again making a detailed homebrewing recipe available on our blog. This time around we used some unmalted wheat, just the right touch of kaffir lime leaf and a really cool Belgian yeast. The result is a bit like a strong Bière de Garde/Saison-esque influenced beer coupled with some aromatic Bavarian Hefeweizen-style phenolic banana esters, and a backnote hint of lime from the lime leaf. Perfect for a match-up with some Thai in SoCal (or wherever in the world you might be), as kaffir lime is often combined with garlic, galanga, ginger, fingerroot and chiles (in the Tom Yum that is, not in this beer). Or, most certainly, you may choose to enjoy alone in a glass along side its Epic brothers.

Bottle shared by Tim, thanks! Pours a clear amber with a white head that starts at the edges and dissipates completely. Aroma has notes of light flora and musty grain with a bit of earthiness. Flavor has light grain with a decent of mustiness.

I was fortunate to try this last night at an epic tasting held by my good friend Mike, thanks for the opportunity MrBarleywine! Pours a slightly hazy medium golden color with a smallish off white head that dissipates fairly quickly. The aroma is sweet caramel and light sugar with a bit of cherry and sherry notes. Hint of lime and spicy yeast notes provide a nice contrast to the sweetness within. The flavor follows the aroma quite well. Sweet and sugary with caramel and sherry notes balanced by peppery spicy bready yeast flavors. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet spicy mouthfeel. This was a nice beer and over the years the flavors have melded quite nicely. The lime aroma and flavor are different, but work against the backdrop of the other flavors.

Location: Bottle at Nerd Beer Epic Weekend, 1/25/13
Aroma: The nose is OK, but pretty dull, with some malts, yeast, and a little cardboard
Appearance: This one pours an orange color with an average sized head
Flavor: Taste-wise, it really falls off, not only is it kinda dull, but it has oxidation on the finish
Palate: The mouthfeel was not bad, but nothing special, light-mid body, and not the best finish
Overall Impression: With the 04.04.04 we really got what we were expecting to get with the 03.03.03, but after that one was such a pleasant surprise, I thought we might be for a really nice vertical. Unfortunately, this bottle was less then stellar.

Tap at City Beer. Pours clear golden orange with a creamy white head. Aroma is lightly fruity. Maybe a touch of banana ester. Med body. Mild carb. Flavor is slightly woody/astringent with some Belgian yeast/spice and some lime/citrus. Hints of toffee. It’s very clean. There’s no heat. Finishes dry and something like a bitter wood - or maybe a lime leaf. It’s pretty tasty for over 8 years old, but I’m thinking it was kept chilled all that time.

I write this review for all of the Stone Vertical Epics from 333 -999 but the numerical ratings of each are different. I pen this review reflecting on my tremendous respect for Horny Devil James – the supplier of these brews, Justin Lithy – the ratebeerian who supplied the locale, Ben london101 – for his VE comments and Beerman6686 Dan - for the interesting insights. Prior to this RB Pittsburgh December 2012 Post Apocalyptic Beer Tasting, I could have cared less for some happy BS vertical beers. However, James and Justin, by providing carefully guided beer experiences, which adjusted the stereo typical stigma that I held about such beers, and there numerical family. After I saw James immediately pour a bottle of 333 down the drain, after we all had a sample was not only breathtaking, but it I had to pinch myself to make sure it wasn’t a dream. I was cautiously thinking to myself, without speaking out loud, about my cheapness, that I would have drank that whole bottle, if it was one of my singular tasking sessions. Perhaps I would have got sick, who knows. Well, for the ratings, they all were rather old, musty and tasted about the same, except the 777. The triple 3 was a dark, flat, old, rude, coors cardboard and bitter; fer sure. The 444 had a somewhat volatile spicy smell and looked like pale lager. Of course, it come across rather old too. The 555 was a dark beer. It had some decent co2 for a change. Bitter initially, then mellowed. However, I found more it acceptable than most IPA. The devil #666 was just that. Dark pour with a decent head. Smell is a little tart, pretty good olfactory. Some co2 on the palate. Not as bad as the first 3 VEs. 777 was the best of the bunch, again a darker ale. Smell is acceptable. Really strong taste but did not have many of those negative old beer thing attributes. Lots of CO2 which makes this more fun – IMHO the best of the bunch fer sure. I thought it was because it was the newest, but modified my impression after having the 888 & 999. With the 888 pour is pale yellah. It must be a strong ale & the medicinal bitterness is quite high. Finish is back of throat bitter bite that goes on for quite a while. And lastly the 999. Seems much older in personality that the 444-888. Actually, I get the impressions of an old barley wine on the nose. Strong & rude. A little over the top fer sure. Does not hide alky what so ever. Not the best VE I’ve ever head, heheh. There – you have it; VE ratings from a VE newbee.

On tap at Churchkey. Pours a clear gold with one ring of white head. Nose of nail polish, fusel alcohol, paint, plastic. Flavor of apples, almost like an ice cider, pear, a little candy, light spice. Medium bodied, dry finish.

Draft @ Lord Hobo, on 12/15/12. We got to enjoy the left over Stone from the 12/12/12 event. Aroma of banana, clove, caramel and spice. Taste of yeast and the lime really makes it somewhat sour for me. Oxidation is all over this brew and it shows mineral water notes. The lime with age didn’t really work for me. Medium body and flat carbonation. For 8 years old not terrible.

Bomber thanks to someone a bit ago. Pours a cloudy orange color with a medium white head. The aroma is a stale cuppa tea, some grains and lemon. The flavor is also tea-like with some paper, light fruit and banana. Of course it is downhill, but I kind liked it.
