Fergus Mor: the legendary king of Dal Riata was the founder of Scotland according to Medieval and Renaissance myth. Rulers of Scotland throughout its history have claimed descent from Fergus Mor. A fitting name for this, the first beer in the Campeador series, a barrel aged collaboration of Cigar City Brewing and Knightly Spirits. Fergus Mor is a blend of Big Sound Scotch Ale and Bolita Brown Ale, topped off with a wee bit of Imperial Stout and aged in a Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel. Limited release of 204 - 750ml bottles.

No doubt the bottle is pretty. Bourbon in the aroma, with brown sugar. I am sensitive to bourbon, and if it isnโ€™t in the perfect amount, with high quality, I usually wonโ€™t like it. Sweet flavor, and more bourbon. It is balanced, and has sort of a Belgian quality to it. One of the better beers I tried from Cigar City, and considering the bourbon, that is saying something.

Special thanks to SoLan for sharing it. Lord have mercy. Starting off - this is simply the best bourbon barrel aged beer I have ever had. Iโ€™ve had a couple of really good ones but this is the real deal. Big oaky bourbon jumps right out at you. This just has it. The bourbon tastes good. The oak tastes good. The chewy caramel tinged with oak tastes good. The tannins from the oak taste good.

Pours murky amber with deeply oxidized rusty edges and tan head. The aroma is bold and crafty and full of homer-istic nuances like cedar, some whiskey, vanilla, some smooth sweetly slick oaky goodness and a mild nuttiness in the background. The taste is . . . wow! I get a wave of rich sweet malts and nuttiness initially and then it blends into sweet whiskey and vanilla. Toward midway chocolate and nuttiness come to the front along with splintery cedar wedges. Whiskey booze, vanilla and molasses notes take over the flavor into the finish. Lots of complex stuff going on here in my glass. Fantastic mouth feel.
