September 2008: Poured into a straight tumbler on the balcony of my hotel overlooking Chania Harbour on the Island of Crete. A setting hard to beat anywhere in the world. The beer was a sparkling Teak Wood Red colour with an off-white head on top which soon fell away to a wisp and a collar. An aroma of toffee, caramel and sweet molasses hit my nose. A pleasant sweetness that didn’t put me off like some sweet smelling beers do. The taste was of dark toffee and treacle, the caramel was there too, but again it wasn’t overly sweet. The beer is thin and watery actually and a bit of a let down after the intial smells and first couple of sips. What I thought and hoped I’d found wasn’t up to stratch in the end, a pity.

Hay nose a little shitty, with traces of cherries. Copper, thin yellow head. Significant amount of caramel on the palate. Slightly grainy. Alcohol not noticeable. Not a half bad vienna.

7/10/10/11/8/11

Bottle @ Crete. Thanks to Kimmer & Metz. Pours clear amber with a small creamy off white head. Bread and caramel. Medium bodied. Smooth. A bit sweet but a pretty fine fine Vienna!
