Asylum is in the style of a Belgian Tripel. It has a beautiful golden color. Its relatively light body is deceiving for a beer of its character. It has a sweet and spicy, complex fruity aroma and flavor derived from our distinct Belgian yeast strain. Asylum finishes with a subtle, warming character to help you relax on any night. Asylum is an exceptionally smooth Belgian-style brew. Drinking great beer brings the world together. “Vrede op aarde” (Peace on earth).

Draft at Taps Beer Bar, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a clear medium amber with a frothy white head and lots of bubbles. The aroma is sweet malt and yeast. The flavour is moderate to strong sweet with a toffee caramel malt, light burning alcohol palate. Medium bodied with lively carbonation. A great example of the style but I’m not a big fan of big alcoholic Tripel’s.

Quite a stretch at calling this a tripel. Karmeliet will always be the benchmark. Lots of candy, caramel sweetness, darkish amber, minimal head. Aroma is also sugary sweet, tending towards Southern Comfort. Lots left lacking here....

Light notes of coriander, light orange peel and good floral yeast integration. Hazy copper pour with ok head and lacing. Light sweet and sour finish. Very understated for style and alcohol content. Tap at Brew’d.

Draft at Brew’d Pub in Frederick, MD shared with Travlr, solidfunk, BeerandBlues2. Clear golden yellow with off-white head. Aromas of syrup, dark fruit. Tastes of syrup, figs. Light body with a dry finish. Medium carbonation.

Bomber from The Cove, a mini market close by our hotel with a few locals. Nose is candisugar, vanilla, caramel toffee. Clear gold with a medium, lightly lacing, off white head. Flavor is moderately sweet vanilla caramel chews with a tiny hint of background bitterness and no hint of the totally covered 11.8%. Exceptionally pleasant drinking after a full day at Disneyland.

In a flight on 13th March 2014 at the Back Bay Bar inside Wholefoods store in Newport Beach. Slight haze to my golden pour, a white wisp and collar for a covering. Most likely the sweetest ’Belgian Style Tripel’ I’ve ever had (and I’ve had a few). Honey Melon came to mind as I sipped this inbetween the other three beers on the little wooden paddle my flight sat on. Maybe the other beers were dry, bitter and hoppy (good name for a beer that: Dry, Bitter and Hoppy), but this just seemed too sweet, even for my sweet tooth. On style alone it would score very poorly, as a strong beer, equally poorly: but as a ’one off’ beer from a brewery I know nothing about I’ve scored it as objectively as I can.

Bomber from Whole Foods Charlottesville. Pours a clear dark amber with a thin frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of pale bready malts, candi sugar, mild yeast and spice, mild fruits in the finish. The taste is candi sugar, caramel, heavy spice, yeast, red apple, bitter herbal hops in the finish. Medium bodied, lingering spice, slight booze. A little brash but still decently balanced. Nice beer.
