At GBBF 2009. Too strong. Lots of intense roasted malt, quite harsh in the mouth, bit stinging. Settles down into a decent impy stout, but still a bit harsh on the alcohol.

Cask at GBBF. Black with a tiny tan head. Chocolate and caramel aroma with strong bourbon. Sweet caramel flavour with big bourbon and oak. But overall, too sweet.

One-third pint, draught, 10.5% abv. Shiny black surface with a deep, pitch black body. Aroma of smoked malts with hints of vanilla oak. Very pleasant taste of mid-sweet plums, prunes, coffee and anise overlaid by a touch of dark spices. Vinous texture. Modest alcohol heating. Delicious mouthfeel and a very nice sipper. In fact, this one turned out to be one of my best bite at the GBBF (London, 04.08.2009).

Cask@GBBF2009. Pitch black colour, not much head. Aroma is sweet liquorice, alcohol, nuts, old coffee and also some toasted notes. Flavour is much the same along with raisins and plum. Flavour is also quite alcoholic burning in the finish.

Cask at GBBF 2009. Black pour with a slight head. Aroma of dark fruit and richness. Taste of dark fruit, coffee, hint of chocolate, incredibly complex, sweet and rich. Jolly good stout.

Cask@GBBF. Opaque black color, not much head. Toasted aroma, some coffee, also milk chocolaty notes. Full-bodied. Lots of vanilla, milk chocolate but also a bit tart, alcoholic notes. Long vanilla aftertaste. Sticky mouthfeel. A bit similar to DFH WWS, but not so complex and strong.

Cask at GBBF 05-08-09 Pours black with no head, there may have been a head when Craig (thanks for saving me this mate) originally got it but it had long since dissappeared. Distinct oakiness and vanilla on the nose, in fact tha barrel ageing is quite noticeable. Feels substantial in the mouth but not too boozy, some bitterness. Oil slicks coat the glass, liqourice and dark sugars are starting to show. Very good stuff. A7 A4 F8 P4 Ov15 3.8

Sample from tap at the brewpub. Pours pitch black with chocolate creamy brown head, lastin for about 30 min. Aroma is coffee and with clear burbon like alcohol presence. Flavour is alcohol dominated, almost taking out the coffee/roasted malt notes. Dry with raisin notes. Alcohol dry finish. Too alcoholic for my taste.

BA version, at brewpub on 6/1/07 - inky black in the snifter, with a frothy, well-sustained head for such a strong beer - powerful (but not overpowerING) oak and vanilla aroma, with hints of bourbon and red wine, some anise and brandy, background roasted malts - nice and dry for such a strong beer, with very prominent tannic, red wine character (probably the most I’ve experienced in a beer) - bittersweet bakers chocolate, black cherries, notes of black coffee far in the back - oak and bourbon come through a bit more when warming, along with some alcohol warmth in the throat, adding a nice touch on top of the red wine flavors - this stuff is great - one of the most well-executed barrel-aged imperials I’ve ever had.
