While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

bottle poured into a pint glass. dark redish brown to black color with very little head. aroma is of raisins and other dark fruits and malts, taste is oretty much the same. Nice baltic porter but its the style that Im just not a huge fan of. the malts start to get too sweet for me and by the end of it, im chewing the sips back, tried to rate it as objectively as possible, but just not a malt fan at all.

Draft at Churchkey. Nearly black, tan head. Aroma of weak coffee grounds and milk chocolate. Tastes like a dilute cafe au lait. Very thin.

Bottled @ Boston/NY 2009. Dark color, short head. Aroma of roasted malt, rye, bready. Bit sweet and salty. Moderate porter imo, as I dont like the rye and bready notes much, but prefer coffee and chocolat.

Bottle, home. Disappointing baltic porter. This beer pours a translucent mahogany with very little head and what’s there dissipated quickly, leaving a liquid looking more like wine than beer. There’s so little head that I have to wonder if this is an off batch or something (will re-review in the future). The aroma is just ok for the style. It’s a malt fruity version without too much roast. There’s some chocolate and caramel in the mix, but it’s mostly apricots, apples, plums, etc. The flavor is rather average, sweet and lacks a hook. There’s just no real oomph to the beer. It’s not bad, per se, but a distinct disappointment for the brewer and style, both of which I quite like normally. The mouthfeel is thin. The beer is drinkable and hides the alcohol well, but it also smells and tastes like a smaller beer. Not sure what happened here.
