Originally brewed to celebrate Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009, Avery Brewing Company elected to give their beer Ale to the Chief a third term to commemorate the 2016 election. Rather than categorizing the beer as Imperial, Avery created a new beer style to honor our country’s democracy, calling the beer a Presidential Pale Ale. A brew worthy of the Oval Office!
”We the Brewers of Avery Brewing Company, in order to form a more perfect ale, require leadership that can liberate us from quagmires in foreign lands; embrace environmentally sound energy alternatives; continue healing our healthcare system; and unite the parties around this bipartisan brew. We hereby pledge to provide him or her with an ample amount of our Presidential Pale Ale whilst they achieve the aforementioned goals! Hail to the Chief!”
All-American pale ales are typically brewed with a bipartisan blend of malt and hops, both of which Avery increased before dry-hopping with a quintessential American hop, Cascade. Though this hop varietal hails from Washington the state, it was nominated to lead this beer due to its floral and citrusy persona. The malts share the power, with Caramel-120 malt adding contributing caramel flavor and color, Honey Malt for honey-like sweetness, and Dark Munich Malt bringing biscuity notes to the table.
This 8.1% alc/vol beer will be sworn into the Avery draft list on Monday, July 18, 2016.
Released in 2009 and 2016.

Aroma: Fruit, citrus
Appearance: Amber-orange color, thick white head still lasting when it got to the table
Flavor: Slight bitterness, but not IPA bitter.
Palate: Medium body, some thickness in the texture
Overall Impression: This was a really nice Strong Alefrom Avery, enjoyed it a lot, had it on tap at RFDs, and would definately drink this one again next time I see it on a menu.

On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown on 01/24/2009. Clear copper amber body with a medium frothy off-white head and some sticky lacing. Big hoppy floral and citrus aroma with some caramel. Sweet caramel flavor with some floral and citrus hops. Medium full body with moderate carbonation.

Hazy amber color; big head; nice lace. The aroma is malty, hoppy and fruity; there is sweet caramel, light mango and light resins; so typical American; very good. Good body strength, strong malt flavor, well sweet, sweet caramel and toffee, and powerful bitterness, with some orange-like fruitness; ligth resin in the final, still sweet. Very good American Strong Ale.

Deep orange color. Full bodied, with oranges, apricots, spices and some bready characters. Although a souped up pale ale, I felt it had a hint of Belgium in there somewhere. Alcohol well hidden. Nice lingering brandish finish. Great for an inauguration day in January.

bottle - Enjoyed to celebrate inauguration day. This brew pours copper with a thin, light tan head. It has a very good pine and citrus hop aroma with an undercurrent of caramel malt. The flavor is a well balanced blend of the above with a medium to full body. The alcohol is just detectable in the flavor. It finishes with some lingering bitterness. It didn’t blow me away, but it’s a very enjoyable quaff.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 22 Jan 2009) Amber colour with firm, rocky, beige head. Fruity, hoppy nose with pine needles, orange peel and very fresh hops. Fruity, hoppy taste with notes of citrus, orange peel, pine needles and resin. Fairly sweet, but the sweet, caramelly malt is brilliantly balanced by the citussy, piney hops. Lovely beer!

Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm. Clear amber, rocky head. Intense peachy perfumy nose. Sweet and full bodied with clean, rounded mouthfeel. Aggresively hopped, but with style and a rock solid body as back drop. The sweetness ends up a bit sticky and n combnation with the immense bitterness it borders to ink.

As everyone else - I saved this one for tonight. I’m drinking this as my first beer under the Obama administration, after witnessing his swearing in downtown in Washington earlier in the day. Slightly hazy deep rusty copper coloured body with orange highlights and a fast-dying nice sized tan head. Aroma of fresh cascade hops, a lot of caramel, some nuts and a decent amount of raisins. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong astringent flavour at first showing a lot of the hops. More flavours show the nice malt, toffee and a little dose of nuts. Aftertaste is quite bitter, but the hops end it nicely! Overall, a good beer - strong and assertive, but mellow on the edges. Hopefully these characteristics will mark the USA over the next four years. Good luck and best wishes for the 44th president of the United States. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia, poured into a glass that shows the president’s future aircraft - on the day the last presidential pilot retired, 20 January 2009.

Bottle: Soft copper color with a finger of creamy beige head. Aroma is rich with hops, mostly citrus and grapefruit scents. A light floral presence and some malty sweet. Hops are up front with a floral and citrus bitter into a sweeter, malty sensation. More fruity hops before lingering floral bitters in the tail. Nicely done.
