Cask at Moon under Water, Wolverhampton Pours a dark ruby red with a small white head and good lacing. Has a strong nutty aroma with almonds and hazelnuts discernable. In the mouth it is an unusual combination of corncobs, dried fruit and biscuits, all underpinned by roast malts. The maltiness lingers in the finish. Reasonable I suppose, but there are better winter ales than this.

Cask @ Percy Shaw, Halifax. Copper with a thin bubbly head. Malty in both aroma and taste, but quite sugary at the same time. Fairly smooth in the palate.

(Cask at Penderel’s Oak JDW, Holborn, London, 26 Nov 2014) Amber colour with brief, beige head. Malty nose with notes of nuts, dried fruit and caramel. Malty taste with caramel, nuts, dried fruit, a touch of chocolate and a fairly sweet finish with a moderate bitterness. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Possibly a touch too sweet, but quite tasty. Quite nice.

Cask at the Kings Head (JDW), Salisbury. It starts off alright; deep golden-amber with a thin white head and a reasonably rich body with a light fizz. Up front there’s straw, syrup, bready malt and a vague hint of spice. But then the straw turns damp, mildewy and earthy, and there’s a rising taste of vomit. There’s little Christmassy about this beer, and by the end little to like either, despite the reasonable start. Shame.

--> Sehr tolles Weihnachtsbier!

Cask @ JDW Elgin 171212
Copper, clear, dense white head with good lacing
Aroma - some farmyard and soft caramel malts
Taste - Fruity sweet malts, cereals, odd yeasty note, toasted malt, hint of burnt biscuit, odd flavour
Palate - medium body, quite sticky, oily, quite cloying, sweet palate. Finish of lingering sweet malts with weetabix
Overall - Nope, better to look at than to drink it
