Ingredients: Dark roasted malt; hops; rice; maize; Asahi’s pure cultured yeast.

Japan’s favourite dark beer. Brewed in Osaka, Asahi Black is made from three different roasted malts. This gives it a rich, nutty flavour and makes it incredibly smooth-drinking. Unlike other, more bitter dark beers and stouts, it’s brewed in a process called bottom fermentation, which gives it a subtle, sweet edge and smooth 5% abv.

Dobre ciemne piwo z Japonii. W odcieniu nie czarne tylko ze sporymi refleksami czerwieni. Spora i pnąca piana, palony słód z orzechowym posmakiem. Przyjemnie się to piwo piło.

334cl bottle poured @ home into a Westmalle chalice during October 2012, just after it’s best before date. Deep ruby red body with thinning tanned head on top: the head becoming a wisp and collar a bit too quickly for my liking. Struggled to find any aroma at all: hints of maltiness as it warmed I suppose. The taste was too close towards a Pepsi Cola with alcohol for me. Wasn’t impressed at all. It had almost the same texture and body feel as well.

Aroma has some caramel and roasted malts. Body is quite thin but has a bit of a silky finish. Flavour has some bittersweet treacle at first but is still light and easy to drink.

New Beer Distributors, NY 11.2oz ($2.50): Pours a black color with a quickly dissipating head. Aroma is molasses, nuts, and roasted malts. Taste is kind of thin. Malts come through, but finish is watery. Tastes kind of like some kinds of soda. Some cheap coffee taste in there as well. Not bad, but it ain’t great.

330ml bottle - an almost black body with tan head, smell of sweet almonds and toasted malts, first taste is a sweet vanilla with a malty edge. Quite nice, but I wouldn’t fancy doing more than a couple at a time.

Bottle bought at Tesco, Watford, Herts. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a healthy beige head on top. Roasty, malty, fruity aroma. Taste is similar, roasty, malty, dark fruit and some coffee in there. Smooth and easy drinking. Pleasant.

33cl bottle. Pours opaque black with steady bubbles and a proportionate head. The nose has hazelnuts and treacle, then some liquorice. The taste has much more liquorice, a creamy note then a bit of smoke. The palate has a medium body, is medium thick in texture and there is quite a clean finish. Overall, nice black lager.

Bottle from Tesco, Inverness.
Black with ruby edges, frothy white head which dissipates to thin layer.
Aroma is light with dark malts, bit of roasted malts, molasses, light marmite.
Taste of light roast malt, cereals, hint of chocolate, slight cardboard.
Palate - thin body, low carb, dry finish with dark malts and cereals.
For a pasteurised macro lager I was quite impressed with this - the roast malts do show through here with the hint of plain chocolate
