Brewed in Houston, ZiegenBock is a beer of the South. Only available in Texas, this American-style amber lager offers notes of roasted grains in the aroma and a sweet, smooth taste with a hop finish. The select imported hops and specialty malts create a taste worthy of a 2006 Great American Beer Festival Bronze Medal.

One of those “local” beers that somehow has failed to be rated. I think of Ziggy being more a Bock, like Shiners, than an amber. Oh well, for better minds than mine to determine. This 25 oz can came from the cooler at the closest HEB, brown bagging it this extremely hot August evening. Flip the tab and take a long, full drink. You know what, it does have more of that amber influence against my recollection. Grain, water, bread, a bit of caramel and perhaps some sorghum. Slammable and sessionable if there is a difference between the two. This beer is not displeasing.

Bottle purchased in Austin, TX. Pours a clear medium brown/very dark bronze color with an off-white head and fair retention. No lacing. Indistinct aroma. Strong, sweet caramel flavor dominates, with a short finish. Low carbonation gives it a somewhat flat mouthfeel. Simple and tasty. Easily repeatable.

Draft at Mad Dogs, San Antonio, TX, USA. Pours a beautiful whisky brown, brilliant. Aroma is sweet cereal, somehow liquor, weak malt. Body is kind light, with moderate carbonation. Taste is moderately sweet. Finish is average. Overall, uninteresting.

Bottle courtesy of Cybercat, thank you ma’am! Clear amber brown color, light tan head with decent retention and fine lacing. Peppery caramel aroma. Taste is sweet lightly toasted caramel biscuit. Tasty.
