It has a full body and distinctive roasted malt taste, balanced by its fresh hop character.

Cask, The Dispensary, Liverpool. Very stout like in appearance - black with a creamy tan head. Roasted malt aroma with some dark fruit. Quite full bodied. Flavour had more malt with elements of chocolate and raisin. Hint of smokiness in there. Very well rounded and drinkable. Dig it !

Half on gravity at The Ipswich Beer Festival. Black brown-tinged. Brownish layer. Pleasant aroma of dark malts. Flavour of dry fruit and cocoa combined with light bitterness. Moderate palate. Dry finish (22.09.2006).

Cask/gravity at Ipswich beer festival 21 Sep 2006. Pitch black. Heavy aroma of chocolate. Hardly any head. Sourish flavour. An everlasting varied aftertaste of chocolate, fruit and coffee. Some dry bitterness.

[Cask at GBBF] Very dark brown. Prunes and roasty malt dominate the aroma. Sweetish and very firm for its size. Very roasty and almost woody. Lightly raisiny finish. An excellent mild!

(Cask at Dispensary, Liverpool, 25 July) Colour is dark brown, almost black, with a dense off-white head. Nose is roasted with notes of coffee, a bit closed. Taste is roasted, with coffee and chocolate. A bit on the thin side. A rather tasty mild.

Cask at County Hotel (JDW) Ashford. Black in colour. Very chocolate malt nose and flavours with burnt charcoal notes. Surprising amount of flavour for a lowish alcohol beer Not as it should be in Liverpool, but the choc malts are wonderful

[Cask at GBBF 2003] A pitch black beer with a fine dense head, that disappears pretty fast. The aroma is like in a fermentation cellar, strong with esters - stinging the nose, combined with a little sourness. The flavor is as if it hasn't finished fermenting - it tastes strongly of yeast. It also contains notes of roasted malt. It has a good palate compared to the ABV.
