Our all-malt amber bitter was first brewed in 1828 to satisfy thirsty Mancunians grafting in the workshop of the world. It soon became our most popular beer, and it's stayed that way. We make it using ale and crystal malt, and Golding hops, for a satisfying flavour and citrus aftertaste that's rewarded Mancunian graft for generations.

(Cask at Rain Bar, Manchester, 28 July) Colour is amber/orange with off-white head. Nose is fruity with notes of mandarin, canned apricots and some dusty hops. Taste is malty and nutty (almond, walnut?) with notes of orange. Some sweetness. Moderate bitterness and some dusty hops in the finish. Well balanced and ok, but on the dull side.

Cask handpull at Lion Tavern, Liverpool. Deep gold with creamy head. Use of sparklers at this pub methinks. Slightly eggy aroma. Firmish in mouth with yeasty hop inish. Could be good but ruined by sparkler. Bitter citrus hop finish, bit bready. OK bitter.
