After its initial release in February 2009, Top Sail was aged for about 10 months in bourbon casks from Kentucky. This extended aging presents aromas of oak, coconut and bourbon. Deep chocolate flavors warm to a full-bodied beer. Deep black in color, Top Sail Bourbon Aged Imperial Porter has a roasty malt flavor that is immensely drinkable and smooth. Very limited availability in 22oz. bottles and draught. ABV 9.85% IBU 65 [retired march 2009 - mj / unretired Feb 2010 - 5000]

Bottle [no doubt from trade but I completely forgot from whom I got this, thanks though!] @ home. Opaque pitch black color, medium sized light brown colored head that lasts for a decent while. Aroma is malts, quite strongly bourbon, some vanilla, lightly roasted malts. Taste malts, lightly roasted malts, bourbon, vanilla, oak/wood lightly, lightly metallic, moderately bitter initially, nice firm bitterness in the finish. Texture-wise a bit thinner than I had expected and hoped, body is decent, carbonation is average to medium. Hmm decent beer, but not as good as I had hoped it would be.

Bottle from 2012. Pours opaque black, medium creamy brown head, dissipates slowly, nice lacing. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, oak. Flavor is medium sweet, and light bitter, lots of bourbon, even more oak. Some woody astringency. Medium body, high carbonation. One of the woodiest beers i have tasted.

Keg at APEX, PDX, 09/11/14. Black with a decent tan covering. Nose is chocolate, spice, coconut shavings, spoce, rich fruit loaf, subtle bourbon. Taste comprises rich dark fructis notes, light boozey overture, Red wrapper Bounty Bar, spice, dark malt, light BA woodness. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent impy affair, good balance, never gets too hot or sweet, well tempered bitter sweet levels.

Lots of bourbon barrel and alcohol right up front, definite winter warmer material, not as smooth as Boulevard Barrel aged quad tried in same session. Pours near black, minimal head, aroma of alcohol and peat. Taste is sharp and biting right from the get go, a true sipper....

Bottle as shown. Pours a dark brown with a tan head that diminishes rather quickly to nothing. The aroma is oak roast and bourbon. Thin mouthfeel with a strong chocolate and roast with oak and nice lingering light smoke finish. A good Imperial porter from Full Sail.

Pours mahogany-tinged black into an English pint. Tan head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Bourbon aromas. Thin with deep chocolate and deep dark bourbon front to back. Thin bourbon finish.
