After its initial release in February 2009, Top Sail was aged for about 10 months in bourbon casks from Kentucky. This extended aging presents aromas of oak, coconut and bourbon. Deep chocolate flavors warm to a full-bodied beer. Deep black in color, Top Sail Bourbon Aged Imperial Porter has a roasty malt flavor that is immensely drinkable and smooth. Very limited availability in 22oz. bottles and draught. ABV 9.85% IBU 65 [retired march 2009 - mj / unretired Feb 2010 - 5000]

Bottle @ home. I was a little disappointed by the standard version of Top Sail, but I’m hoping this one is better- maybe I need to try the standard version again. Deep brown/black appearance with a small, light brown head. Sweet bourbon, light oaky, vanilla, rich dark chocolate malty, light coconut aroma. Somewhat thick, sticky mouth feel. Somewhat bitter, slightly piney hoppy, caramel/toffee/bourbon, dark chocolate flavor with some mild fruit notes. Quite sweet, rich finish that’s almost to the point of cloying to me. I enjoyed the aroma a lot more than the actual flavor.

A deep dark porter with a thin brown head. In aroma, chocolate malt with dark fruits, light sulfur notes, pleasant bourbon, nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity porter, with chocolate malt, alcohol warmth, light bourbon, still solid after close to 10 years. Bottle from 2011.

Bottle shared by badnewsbeers. Deep opaque brown body with reddish highlights, thin ring of beige carbonation. Nice nose of bourbon, coffee, alcohol, and oak. Hot body with prickly alcohol and bourbon and potent notes of coffee, roast, vanilla, and toasted coconut. Pretty good complexity.

Bomber. Opaque black body with a thick, beige head, diminshing quickly. Nice chocolate aroma with notes of bourbon, vanilla, licorice, wood and roasted malt. The flavor is heavily sweet, lightly bitter and lighly acidic. It finishes moderately to heavily sweet and moderately bitter and lightly to moderately acidic. Medium to full body, creamy texture, moderate carbonation - some chalkiness in the finish. Lots of chocolate in the taste as well as the aroma. A bit boozy in the finish. The beer’s sweetness overpowers other characteristics, including the acidic, dry, alcoholic and bitter twang at the back of the tongue. Too bad.

Pours a solid black, with a stingy tanish head that doesn’t stay very long. Aroma is heavy on the bourbon and a bit of a solvent alcohol type smell. Some malty oakey aromas and a touch of vanilla. Taste is malty bourbon and a bit of an alcohol hotness. Some chocolates in here too. Crisp carbonation and an oily/creamy mouthfeel. The higher alcohols hindered my total enjoyment of this one. As it warmed those smells subsided a bit and I was able to enjoy it a little more. Not bad, but not great.

i really wanted to like this beer but it was just too harsh and boozy. Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy brown head that lingered and produced great lacing. The aroma was bourbon, cocoa and vanilla. The flavor was harsh and boozy with a strong port wine element and notes of vanilla, cocoa, bourbon and cherries. The alcohol was rough and pronounced. The finish was long and boozy with bourbon and port wine lingering. Fairly thick and smooth and body. Interesting but falls short.
