Fitfully off-kilter for a Zappa-inspired ale. The sweetness takes hold as soon as the liquid hits your palate, delving into near sweet-tea territory, before gaining a British fruit/nut/yeast backbone that does nothing to alleviate the cloying flavors piling up on your tongue. The American Brown Ale finish you so desire never comes along, leaving you with a pint much too sweet to savor. (1/09)

2 year-old plus bottle. Deep brown with orange tints and a hgh, frothy head. Rich caramel and some chocolate in the aroma, slightly oxidized, with raisins. Flavors of caramel, chocolate, raisins and other dired fruits, alcohol, lots of bittr hops. Nice stuff. Very well integrated at this age.

Bottled. An amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and over ripe fruit. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and fruit, as well as well as a bit of oxidation, leading to a dry metallic finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

A red copper ale with a thick moka head. A pleasant caramel and c-hops in aroma, with light vanilla notes. In mouth, a good malty nutty malt, with metallic c-hops, chertnut notes. Not overly bitter. Tasted Nov. 21 2008.

Beautiful red amber color. Rather than the hop, this beer from Lagunitas lingers on the caramel, only dweller in the aroma section; stronger caramel flavor, some sticky sugars, and quite strong bitterness. Good, but I’m used to a less caramelly flavor, and more aromatic, resiny or fruity hops.
